🔴 Scribblings and Scuttlebutt Jan-Jun 2017

This is where I post my thoughts and reblog stuff from other sites I find interesting or topical, mostly topics from Twitter, Tumblr and blogs. This is probably the closest thing on this blog to a “blog.” I also post notes on things not working or behind. Increasingly, that’s been mostly what it is. Lightly edited. Reverse chronological. Comments are open.

🔴 James Spader as Outsider

🔴 James Spader as Outsider

–– Boston Legal to The Blacklist

Jan 7, 2015

In Boston Legal (ABC, 2004-2008), James Spader played Alan Shore, an often politically incorrect advocate in many cases involving “lost causes” (most of which, in the make-believe world of the Crane, Poole & Schmidt law firm, he actually won). His penchant for clarity and honesty was his weakness & his strength. In perhaps the most memorable episode, he even told “The Court Supreme” exactly what they needed to hear about the death penalty. Even his sexism was funny & endearing because it was – hey! – sincere. During the Bush years, Alan Shore’s truth-telling buoyed many a despondent liberal in the face of what Stephen Colbert dubbed “Truthiness”.

🔴 2:8 Decembrist: Red, The Stewmaker & Redemption

@Belle My take on the return of the Stewmaker: Fitch had the Stewmaker send the picture to Red to make him let him know that someone (turns out, Berlin) would be coming after him for the supposed death of “the girl” (Zoë). It may have been that threat that prompted Red to leave Liz with Sam to protect her and to flee because he “believed his life was in danger.”

2:7 Scimitar: How it will all end (11/5/2014)

@JBlitz I predict that in the last episode of the show, Red #1 will ‘allow’ Liz #2 to kill him. With the other Blacklisters dead, that will be the end of his journey of redemption. Whether Liz is good or bad at that point would be a good question. James Joyce ended Finnegan’s Wake suggesting the myth of the eternal return. The last half-sentence of the book is completed by the first half-sentence of the book. I also predict that if the showrunners choose this route, I won’t be watching.

2:7 Scimitar: Misc Q&A (11/4/2014)

@Hanna The spot after The Voice’s super-high ratings gives a boost to new shows. They are moving The Blacklist to Thursdays because they think it has developed its own strong viewership that will follow it to the new time slot. That lets them use the coveted Monday slot for State of Affairs.

2:7 Scimitar: Is Red beyond redemption? (11/4/2014)

Something like 15 million people watch this show, either live or on DVR, so I think we need to be cautious in assuming it is only intended for those of us who work canons or timelines or scripts or Amazon Prime.

When Red told Liz in the pilot “if anyone can give me a second chance, it’s you,” I took it to mean he was looking for redemption. The story of the farmer he told to the Stewmaker laid it out:

2:6 Mombasa: In which I pour my heart out (10/30/2014)

@A.M. I speculated that Red was an imposter, too, just based on the way Diane Fowler addressed him when he showed up in her home, like “”Red.”” You could just see the quotation marks hanging sarcastically in the air. Still, that’s slim evidence. Maybe her tone was just meant to convey contempt.
