Brief (Where weāre at):
Rakitin, aka Andrew Patterson (Blacklister #28) is dead, poisoned by Red before he could tell Cooper and the task force about his work for the Russian SVR and that Red is the secret operative N-13. Rakitin had gone behind Redās back to their Moscow-based āFriend in the Eastā to get permission to kill Cooper after Red had said no. So Rakitin lured Cooper out by forcing Congressman Russell Friedenberg at gunpoint to place a call to Cooper calling him to meet in a secret location. Rakitin then killed Friedenberg. Cooper showed up at the location and was captured. Rakitin explained to Cooper that his death, like Friedenbergās, would look accidental.
In the meantime, the āEastern Friendā called Red to tell him of the plan, infuriating Red. Red called Rakitin to tell him if he was going to kill Cooper, to āsqueeze him first,ā in part to buy some time, but more importantly, so Aram could use the call to trace Rakitin and Cooperās location. An FBI TAC team raided the location, saving Cooper and arresting Rakitin. But Red had also unavoidably let the FBI know that he knew how to reach Rakitin by phone, inevitably adding to the evidence that he and Rakitin were indeed working together.
With Cooperās boss, Cynthia Panabaker, watching from his office ā and still hopping mad ā Cooper went to interrogate Rakitin. When Rakitin wouldnāt talk, Cooper played for him a recording of the call Red had had with Rakitin plus the post-Rakitin discussion between Aram and Red. Cooperās purpose was to convince Rakitin that Red had turned on him and was not his friend, but Cynthia Panabaker burst in, realizing Cooper likely had divulged that Red is their confidential informant. Outside the interrogation room, she asked Cooper why ā if Red is N-13 ā he would hand over Rakitin and save Cooper.
In the meantime, Red and Dembe called on an old acquaintance, a retired impresario of toxins who had formerly done work with MI6, to have him concoct a way to keep Rakitin from talking. Red then called in the āunpleasant favorā Agent Park owed him for disappearing a man named Mason Dieterle, whose testimony could land Park in prison. The āfavorā: delivering an envelope to Rakitin containing āinstructions.ā
Angry at Red for betraying him, Rakitin offered to make a statement detailing his own undercover work and his relationship with Red. Park discretely offered to deliver some paperwork to Rakitin, which she did, along with Redās āinstructions.ā When Rakitin opened the envelope, the single folded piece of paper inside was blank, which he took as a cruel joke. Minutes later ā before he could respond on videotape to Cooperās questions about Red ā he was gripped by the effects of the nerve agent that had been embedded in the blank page of paper in the envelope and fell dead.
Red then paid a visit to Cooper and Panabaker, telling Cooper he had warned him and telling them both they were āsaferā for not having heard what Rakitin had to say ā before jetting off to meet with āOur Friendā in Moscow, who was livid. Red responded by punching him in the jaw and giving him some truth, saying it was his [Redās] āendgameā that was playing out, not anyone elseās, before the two huddled to talk about how to replace Rakitin.

Previously on āThe Blacklistā:
[ A bench in a park in New York City ]
Red: Do you mind if I join you?
Anne: Iām Anne.
Red: Raymond.
āā
[ Walking down a path in the park ]
Red: I donāt know, Anne. I think your life sounds rather balanced.
Anne: I like to think it is. What do you do?
Red: Iām a fugitive.
āā
Anne: Some people like to live dangerously.
Red: What do you have in mind?
Anne: You. Helping me. Finding a souvenir for my sister.
Red: I know an extraordinary tiny, tiny, ābarely enough room for the both of usā chocolate shop.
āā
[ The chocolate shop ]
Red: What about āNorth by Northwestā? Itās playing at the Village East tomorrow, midnight screening. Youāll find me waiting for you under the marquee.
āā
[ Outside the movie house, Anne wait for Red ]
[ Anneās cellphone ringsāØ]
Anne: Raymond?
Red: Anne, I am so terribly sorry. Iām afraid Iām not gonna be able to make it tonight.
Ā
[ In the kitchen of Redās restaurant, Red and Dembe are discussing investments with Mr Cane, a investment broker ]
[ Red checks his wristwatch ] [ Ticking ]
Mr. Cane: Your position in commodities is strong. Copper, gold. But the real returns have been in crypto. As you can see, year-to-date, bitcoin has an 800% return. Your insistence on taking a large position was insanely prescient. Must be nice, being so rich that getting richer bores you.
Red: Iām not bored. Iām just ā anxious to leave.
Dembe: We have another appointment.
Red: An appointment Iām a little bit more concerned about than the ā state of my liquidity. Weāre running late. What do you know about bridge? The game, not the way to cross from here to there.
Mr Cane: Bridge? I donātā I-Iām sorry. I was under the impression that a comprehensive review of your investments and holdings was of the utmost importance at this time?
Dembe: It is. We anticipate a significant increase in our need for available resources over the next few months.
Red: Well, there you have it. We all have different interests and priorities, donāt we? For instance, in the morning, Mr. Zuma likes to start with the business section then move on to the sports. I like to start with the funnies and fall asleep in my chair. Takes me all day to read the paper.
Dembe: I like the funnies.
Red: No, Iā He likes the funnies, as well, but he also has an amazing head for business. Numbers and trends and, you know, all the rest of it. Whereas I wouldnāt know a bitcoin from a subway token.
Mr Cane: Well, you wouldnāt have to. Uh, bitcoins arenāt a tangible thing.
Red: They arenāt? I wouldnāt know. My investment in bitcoin was neither prescient nor insane. I was just following Mr. Nakamotoās instructions. Satoshi said buy, I bought.
Mr Cane: Satoshi Nakamoto You know him? Whoā Who he really is?
Red: Yes, well, Dembe knows him better than I. Theyāre like, you knowā
Dembe: I-Is there anything else we need to review? We do have a plane to catch.
Mr Cane: Uh, well, thereās your holdings in Singapore and the BSE, butā I-Iām sorry. You know Nakamoto? The Nakamoto? No one knows Nakamoto.
[ Red and Dembe rise ]
Red: Mr. Cane, we really must be going, which means you need to be going.
Mr Cane: [ Getting up ] Okay, well, if thereās anything else I can help you withā
Red: Not unless you know something about bidding or suit management.
Dembe: Bridge.
Mr Cane: No.
Ā
[ On Redās plane, Red is reading a book about bridge ]
Dembe: Can I tell you what Iām concerned about? Townsendā
Red: Oh, I am so confused. The more I read, the less I understand this game.
Dembe: āand that Iām not going to be there with you. Raymond, Iām serious.
Red: I know, and I love that about you. But Iāll be fine. Iā Iāll be fine.
Dembe: No patterns. You taught me that. You said itās the first rule of staying a step ahead of your enemies. Do something once, it may go undetected. Maybe twice. After that, itās a pattern.
Red: How many visits will this be?
Dembe: Five.
Red: āā I like her. I like coming home to a port. Seeing a candle burning in a window. A smiling face waiting to greet me. Iā I never liked it before. I like it now. Did you know that irises are the state flower of Tennessee?
Dembe: Whatās the state flower of Kansas?
Red: The sunflower. She grew up with them. She likes irises.
Dembe: I should be with you.
Red: You should be with Raymond Reddington. When Iām with Anne, thatās not who I am.
Dembe: It may not be who you want to be, but itās always who you are.
Ā
[ Anneās house in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. Anne, her best friend Lois and Bran are waiting for Red to join them for a game of bridge ]
[ Dog barking ]
Lois: So much for the sexiest man alive.
Bran: [ To the dog ] Down, girl.
Lois: Iām just saying, I like punctuality.
Bran: Maybe his plane was delayed.
[ Door opens ]
Lois: So, why hasnāt he called yet?
Red: Only because I like to make a dramatic entrance.
Anne: Raymond! Irises! Oh, youāre so sweet.
Red and Anne kiss: Mm.
Bran: [ Quietly, to Lois ] Promise me youāll play nice.
Lois: [ Also quietly ] What are you talking about? Iām a total softie.
Anne: Iāll put these in water and make you a sandwich. You remember Bran and Lois.
Red: Yes, of course. Hello, Bran, Lois.
Bran: Hello, Ray!
Lois: Hello!
Red: I hope youāll go easy on me tonight.
Bran: Youāll do fine.
[ Bran is in a corner pouring drinks at a small table ]
Bran: Gin and tonic?
Red: Yes!
Bran: Weāve gotten a head start.
Red: Iām sure Iāll catch up. [ Chuckles ]
Bran: Iām not so sure you will. [ Shows that the bottle is almost empty ] Oh. Need a refill.
[ Bran leaves; only Lois remains ]
Red: Lois.
Lois: So, flight delayed?
Red: Yes. Seems to be the norm nowadays.
Lois: Anne is very trusting. She thinks because we live in a small town, sheās got nothing to be afraid of. Itās why she leaves her door unlocked.
Red: It wasnāt unlocked just now.
Lois: Really? Then howād you get in?
Red: Anne gave me a key.
Lois: Look. Iām Annieās best friend.
Red: Yes.
Lois: I want her to be happy.
Red: That makes two of us.
Lois: Good, because if you mess this up, Iām gonna kill you.
[ Both chuckling ] [ Red nods and chuckles ]
Ā
[ The group plays bridge ]
Lois: Pass.
Red: Anyone for Go Fish?
Anne: Thatās not a bid.
Red: Youāre right. Itās a cry for help.
Bran: You canāt make a bid?
Red: How about Crazy Eights?
[ Chuckles ]
Red: No? Okay. I bid ā one heart? One heart.
Bran: Thatāll do. Two diamonds.
Anne: Two spades.
Lois: Pass.
Red: Pass, I think.
Bran: Pass.
Lois: Jack of hearts.
Bran: Ugh.
Red: And now itās my turn again?
Lois: No. Now youāre the dummy.
Red: Thatās a bit harsh.
Bran: Your hand is the dummy. Lay your cards down, face up.
Anne: Thank you. Iām your partner. When youāre the dummy, you say āgood luckā back to me. Itās tradition.
Red: Well, good luck, good lookinā.
Bran: [ Chuckles ] Now you can go get yourself a piece of that cake before I eat it all.
Red: Much to everyoneās relief.
[ Red gets up ]
Red: Kick some ass.
āā
[ Red goes to help himself to cake ]
Red: So, Lois, whatās it like to be a police officer in a small town? I ask because Iām something of a true-crime buff.
Bran: You are? So am I! I like the podcasts and the documentaries on Netflix.
Red: Yes! I love those. I loved āThe Staircase.ā
Bran: Oh.
Anne: Queen of hearts from dummy.
Red: And I love reading them, too. I first got hooked on āIn Cold Blood,ā then āExecutionerās Song.ā
Bran: Ooh, I can take that. Ace of hearts. I havenāt read that one, Ray.
Red: Oh, you should. Norman Mailer.
Lois: Nothing like that goes on around here. Thank goodness. Itās a pretty quiet town. Iāve got a gun, but Iāve never used it. I canāt imagine I ever would.
[ Red eats some cake ]
Red: Mmm. Smart and sweet and funny ā and she bakes.
[ Laughter ]
Anne: I wish. Cindi made that and brought it over after we had that fender bender in the parking lot. Thatās how you say youāre sorry in a small town.
Red: Well, bless Cindiās heart. And her frosting.
Bran: Six of clubs.
Anne: King of clubs.
Lois: Seven of clubs.
Bran: Tell me how you two met again.ā
Anne: 9 of clubs from the dummy.
Bran: āBecause it clearly wasnāt at a bridge tournament.
[ Laughter ]
Red: We met in the park. Anne was watching birds. I was watching Anne. We bonded over a Cape May Warbler.
Anne: Then he asked me to go see āNorth by Northwestā and promptly stood me up. But heās more than made up for that since.
Red: Weāve been having an ongoing classic-film festival. We started with movies with musical numbers.
Anne: Heās usually asleep long before the end credits.
Red: Not tonight. Tonight, we start on Italian cinema from the 1960s.
Bran: Oh, gā
Red: No one can sleep through that zeitgeist of cool.
[ Laughter ]
Red: Not even the dummy.
Ā
[ Accordion music playing on television ]
[ Anne sits on the couch watching the movie. Red has fallen asleep, his head on her thigh. She covers him with a throw ]
Ā
[ Itās morning. Red sits at the kitchen table, working to repair an old phonograph player ]
Red: Ah. Iām gonna have to re-solder a wire on the output connector for this turntable to work. I donāt suppose you have a soldering iron, do you?
Anne: Uh, no.
[ Both chuckle ]
Red: You know what? I think Iām gonna run down to the hardware store and see if I can pick one up.
Anne: Take the truck. You donāt want to waste gas on your rental. You know where the keys are.
Red: Iāll have us dancing in no time.
They kiss: Mm. Mm. Mm.
Red: What?
Anne: Nothing.
Red: No, no, no. What, what?
Anne: Iām a straight-as-an-arrow 52-year-old. I was married to one man, my high-school sweetheart, for 25 years. Iām in a book club. I go to church on Sundays. And somehow, Iām in a relationship with someone who when he says the words āoutput connectorāā [ Inhales deeply ] āall I can think about is sex.
Red: Thatās what Iām always thinking about when I say āoutput connector.ā
Ā
[ Main street in Cottonwood Falls ] [ Red gets out of the truck ] [ Indistinct conversations ]
[ Red sees a van marked āChase County Water and Powerā ]
[ Flashback: ]
Dembe: No patterns. You said itās the first rule of staying a step ahead of your enemies.
[ Red watches a man get out of the truck with a work bag ]
[ Red enters a hardware store ] [ Bell jinglesāØ]
Ā
Anne: Do you have to go on Monday?
[ Merrilee Rushās ā« āAngel of the Morningā plays ]
[ ⬠Go to Full Lyrics ] or [ ⪠Tap square below to play ⪠]
āŖ Thereāll be no strings to bind your hands āŖ
Anne: I mean, I know you do. I justā I wish you wouldnāt.
āŖ Not if my love canāt bind your heart āŖ
Red: I would do anything to stay.
Anne: But youāre busy at work.
Red: This is a particularly ā fraught time.
Anne: āFraught.ā
Red: Something that I haveā
āŖ I see no reason to take me home āŖ
Red: āworked for many years to build and protect is at risk.
āŖ Iām old enough to face the dawn āŖ
Anne: That must be very hard. Iām sorry. Is there anything I can do to help you?
āŖ Just call me angel of the morning, angel āŖ
Red: Youāre already doing it.
Anne: Iām serious.
āŖ Just touch my cheek before you leave me, baby āŖ
Red: So am I. Out there, my life is so complicated.
āŖ Just call me angel of the morning āŖ
Red: And here, itās not.
Anne: I want to do more than help you set aside your burdens. I want to help you carry them. I canāt do that unless you tell me what they are.
Red: Anne.
Anne: What?
Red: You want to dance?
[ They dance ]
[ Louder: ]
āŖ And if weāre victims of the night
I wonāt be blinded by the light
Just call me angel of the morning, angel āŖ
[ They dance and kiss ]
āŖ Just touch my cheek before you leave me, baby āŖ
[ Anne guides Red until his back is against the wall. They continue kissing passionately but sweetly ]
āŖ Just call me angel of the morning, angel
Then slowly turn away āŖ
[ Ann reaches down and undoes the tab on Redās pants ]
āŖ I wonāt beg you to stay
With me āŖ
Ā
[ Itās morning. Red wakes in Anneās bed. She is not there. He pulls her pillow over his face to take in her scent. He smiles ]
āā
[ Red, now dressed, descends the stairs toward the kitchen. He pauses as he hears Lois talking to Anne ]
Lois: Itās not like I ran his fingerprints. Iām just saying I wouldnāt mind.
Anne: Because he likes true crime? I like true crime.
Lois: All Iām saying is you know next to nothing about him.
Anne: I know ā a lot.
Lois: [ Scoffs ]
Anne: I know how he makes me feel. I know heās got a business and itās got problems. And I know when heās here, those problems go away.
Lois: What business? What problems? I know, I know. Iām the overprotective friend who should mind her own business. Iām just saying, I have never met anyone from New York who wasnāt either pushy, rude, or a complete narcissist.
Anne: Well, first of all, heās not from New York. And, Lois, to the world, Iām invisible, but not to him. He sees me, and I love him for it. I do. I love him.
[ Stairs creak ] [ Red grimaces ]
Lois: Does he know about the love part?
Anne: No.
Lois: He does now.
Red: Good morning, ladies. That coffee smells delicious.
Anne: Good morning.
[ They kiss briefly ]
Lois: Hungry? I brought muffins.
Red: Thank you, Lois! But I prefer cereal, the breakfast of narcissists. So we can gaze admiringly at our reflection in the spoon.
Lois: I better get on into the station. [ To Anne ] Sorry.
Red: Goodbye, Lois.
[ Door opens and closes ]
[ Anne and Red kiss again. She strokes his head and puts her arms around his neck ]
Anne: Have I told you about the fork-tailed flycatcher?
Red: Sheās right.
Anne: How they gather near the elm trees south of town?
Red: You know almost nothing about me.
Anne: I know everything I need to know ā Unless, of course, those ābusiness problemsā are a euphemism for a wife or a husband somewhere.
Red: No wife. No husband. But there is a cat.
Anne: [ Chuckles ]
Red: As well as other things you should know about me. About who I am.
Anne: Raymond. I know who you are. Youāre someone who needs to see the fork-tailed flycatcher. Which I intend to show you, just as soon as I find my binoculars. Iām gonna go upstairs, and youāre gonna make us some sandwiches to take with. Howās that sound?
Red: It sounds just right.
[ Kiss ]
Ā
[ Anne returns from upstairs ]
Anne: I found two pairs and a blanket.
Red: I found salami and cheese.
Anne: Iāll get a basket for the food, and weāre good to go.
Red: You told me the flycatcher can range as far south as lower Mexico, and some have even been spotted as far down as Argentina.
Anne: What was that?
[ Red runs the faucet and glances out of the window ]
Red: Nothing. I was justā
[ Suspenseful music plays ] [ Across the street is parked the van he had seen earlier, marked āChase County Water and Powerā ]
Anne: What were you saying?
Red: I was sayingā I was remembering that you said you were thinking about becoming a vegetarian.
Anne: That pipe dream was about 12 pounds ago.
Red: Thatās something my doctor is always bugging me about. Didnāt you say there was an excellent vegan sandwich shop in town?
Anne: But youāre already making lunch.
Red: Which we can bring, in case the tofurkey is inedible. Why donāt you run into town, order for both of us? Iāll finish up, pack, and be ready to go when you get back.
Anne: Are you sure?
Red: Positive.
Anne: Okay. Two tofurkey sandwiches cominā up.
[ Door opens and closes ] [ Engine starts ] [ Anne drives off ]
Ā
[ Red walks around the house. At the back, a Water & Power Guy is fiddling with a meter ]
Red: Oh. Hey, there.
Water & Power Guy: Hey. Here on a call. Wonāt be long.
Red: A call? Really? What seems to be the problem?
Water & Power Guy: County sent me. Areaās been having outages. I just gotta check your ground wires. Itās standard.
Red: Okay. Very good. Vague, but detailed enough. Delivered with authority.
Water & Power Guy: Iām not sure what you mean.
[ Redās look darkens ]
Red: You know what I mean.
Water & Power Guy: Listen, mister, if it helps, I got the work order right here.
Red: Great.
[ The Water & Power Guy unzips his work bag. Red sees the gun inside. He stabs the man in the gut with a chefās šŖ knife from the kitchen ] [ Blade plunges ]
Water & Power Guy: Ugh!
[ Red holds the man from behind, the knife at his throat ]
Red: How many are coming?
Water & Power Guy: āā Everyone.
[ Red slices the manās throat and lets him fall. He grabs the gun from the bag and walks around the side of the house with the gun on full display. The āWater and Powerā van takes off ] [ Tires squealing ] [ā”ļøTires screechā”ļø]
Ā
[ Later. Two black SUVs pull up to Anneās house ]
[ Door opens ] [ Neville Townsend gets out ] [ Door closes ]
[ Men with assault rifles pile out of the SUVs and swarm toward the house ]
[ Townsend walks up to the front door and enters ]
āā
[ Footsteps approach ]
Neville Townsend: You found Arkham.
Vandyke: In a chest freezer in the garage. His weaponās gone, vehicleās gone.
Townsend: The girlfriend, Miss Foster. Ping her cell.
[ Telephone āļø rings ]
Townsend: She left less than 20 minutes ago. Reddington wasnāt far behind. Wherever sheās going, thatās where heās going.
Vandyke: Copy that. What do you want to do about the missing vehicle?
[ Telephone āļø ringing ] [ Townsend picks it up ]
Townsend: Reddington.
[ Red is driving ]
Red: This is between you and me. It has nothing to do with her.
Townsend: You must be referring to Miss Foster.
Red: She has no idea who I am.
Townsend: My family had no idea who you were. They didnāt know why they were singled out or targeted, but that didnāt prevent their suffering.
Red: You still have time to rethink this. Itās not too late.
Townsend: Itās interesting to me how you speak as if you have any say in how this will end for you, Raymond ā as if it can somehow be resolved in a civil manner. The one thing I can assure you of ā The one thing ā is that what is about to happen is going to be anything but civil.
Vandyke: They got a track on the womanās cell. Sheās close. I have a second team on their way to her now.
Ā
[ Red finds the vegan shop where Anne went to buy sandwiches. He enters ]
Red: Anne.
Anne: Hey. What are you doing here? If you needed something else, you couldāve called me.
[ Red grabs Anneās arm and pulls her out of the shop ]
Red: I need you to come with me.
Anne: Is that blood on your hand? What happened?
Red: Iāll explain in the car.
[ Ahead, a black minivan pulls over and a black-haired young woman gets out ]
Anne: Raymond, are you okay? I-I donātā Whatāsā Whatās going on?
[ The black-haired woman walks toward them. She takes out a cellphone ]
[ Red abruptly turns, pulling Anne by the arm to head the other way ]
Red: Stay with me.
Anne: Raymond, please, where are we going?
Red: Give me your phone.
Anne: Raymond, what on earth is wrong?
Red: Your phone, please.
Anne: Raymond, youāre scaring me. Whatās going on? And whoās that woman?
[ Anne hands Red her phone. He throws it into a trash receptacle, along with the bag of food ]
[ They walks a short distance ]
Red: Here.
[ They enter a shop ]
[ Bell jinglesāØ]
Proprietor: Hello. Can I help you?
[ Bell jinglesāØ]
[ Red flips the sign on the door to say āClosed.ā Red then points to the door with the gun he took from the Water and Power Guy ]
Red: [ To the Proprietor ] You should leave.
Anne: Is that a gun?! Raymond!
[ The Proprietor leaves ]
Red: [ To Anne ] Here. Come with me.
[ They head toward the back of the shop ]
Anne: No! Answer my question! What is going on?
Red: Iām not who you think I am. I have another life, and that life found us here today. We are in danger, and I need to keep you safeā
[ Glass breaks ] [ Red spins toward the door ]
Anne: Someone wants to hurt you?
Red: They want to hurt us.
[ Red finds a closet with a louvred door for Anne to hide in ] [ He gives her the gun ]
Red: Here. Stay here. Stay quiet. Only open the door if itās me. Anyone else, shoot. Do you understand? Just point and pull the trigger.
[ Door opens, bell jinglesāØ] [ Door closes, bell jinglesāØ] [ The woman with the black hair is inside, searching for them ] [ Anne whimpering ]
[ The woman approaches Anneās hiding place ]
[ Suddenly, Red jumps the woman, throwing a belt over her head ]
[ Woman gasps ] [ She struggles ] [ Grunting ] [ Woman grunts ]
[ As Anne watches, Red strangles the woman to death with the belt. Then he takes her gun ]
[ Red opens the closet door ]
Red: Anne.
Anne: Raymond. W-What did you do?
Red: We have to go.
Ā
[ Outside, on the sidewalk, Red pulls Anne along ]
Anne: Who was that woman?
Red: Please, just try and keep up.
Anne: Where are you taking me? I donāt wantā stop! Let go of my hand!
[ Red puts his hands on Anneās shoulders ]
Red: Anne, please. Listen to me. There are people coming for us. Itās not safe. You need to come with me.
Anne: Come with you where?
[ A black SUV pulls up across the street, as they head toward the Cottonwood Falls Police Station ]
Ā
[ Red pulls Anne with him into the police station. Anneās best friend Lois is there, along with Police Chief Bill Russell, Officers Brandt and Pembry and several other people ]
[ Red raises his hands in the air ]
Red: [ Loudly ] Officers, may I have your attention, please? Iām sorry to interrupt.
Lois: What are you two doing here?
Red: May I please have your attention? My name is Raymond Reddington.
[ Anne rushes over to Lois ]
Anne: Listen to what he has to say.
Red: Iām a wanted fugitive. I have two firearms on my person.
[ He parts his coat ]
ā Gun!
Red: Someone will need to disarm me.
[ Two officers come forward to take the guns ]
Red: Lois, we have a situation. I need you to listen to me very carefully.
[ One of the officers cuffs Red ]
Ā
[ Helicopter blades whirring š]
[ Telephone ringing āļø ]
[ Red is now handcuffed to a sturdy cabinet ]
Officer Pembry: [ On another line ] Chief! Agent Barnes again on three. Says they have confirmation.
Police Chief Bill Russell: Agents en route?
Officer Pembry: In the air now. 40 minutes out.
Red: Within 40 minutes, everyone in this building could be dead.
[ Officer Brandt has pulled up Wanted Posters for Red on his computer ]
Officer Brandt: You really are him.
Red: Lois, you need to get her somewhere safe. Now. We donāt have much time. You need to contact the highway patrol and sheriffās department and any available units from other counties.
Chief Russell: Can someone shut him up?
Officer Pembry: Chief, I got someone from the D.C. field office on line two.
Red: They are coming here. Dangerous, highly trained mercenaries.
Anne: Heās not making it up. I saw him kill a woman.
Lois: Kill who?
Red: Lois, look at me. I am the most wanted man to ever come through those doors ā By a lot ā And I came here by choice, not to surrender myself, but to protect Anne from the very bad men who are coming. You need to get her somewhere safe, because they will not be intimidated by the fact that youāre the police. They will assault this building and kill everyone inside to get to me. Please, get on the mutual-aid band and scramble any units within earshot, because this is happening right now.
Chief Russell: It isnāt just Wichita coming for you, friend. Kansas City suits are on the way, a team out of D.C.
Officer Brandt: Chief, will you take a look at this?
āā
Lois: Anne, talk to me. What do you mean he killed someone? Killed who?
Anne: I donāt know who she was.
Lois: You saw him do it?
āā
[ Chief Russell and Officer Brandt look out of the glass doors of the station. The two black SUVs have pulled up ]
Officer Brandt: Neither one has plates.
Red: You may want to get away from those doors, Chief.
Lois: What is happening?
Anne: Theyāre here, arenāt they?
Red: Lois, I am begging you. Youāve got to get your boss to enact lockdown protocols. Get on the radio, whatever cavalry you have, call them in, now!
Chief Russell: She doesnāt have the authority to give that order, and you sure as hell arenāt authorized to give it.
Red: You need to get ahead of this, Chief.
Lois: Sir, heās right. Whatever this is, we are not equipped.
Chief Russell: Okay. Hereās what weāre gonna do. I want all nonessential personnel out of the building. Beth, get the others and go out the back. Pembry, find out what units County has in the area and where they are!
Lois: Brandt, notify Butler and Lyon counties and put local EMS on standby.
āā
Anne: [ To Red ] Who are you?
Red: You need somewhere safe where you can hide.
Ā
[ Neville Townsend and Vandyke are still at Anneās house ]
[ Vandyke hangs up from a call ] [ Beepš
]
Vandyke: That was Reeves. There was an incident in town, but they have eyes on Reddington.
Townsend: What kind of incident?
Vandyke: Landon. Sheās gone.
Townsend: And Reddington?
Vandyke: He took the woman and went into the local police station.
Townsend: Ah. Raymond. You do keep things interesting.
Vandyke: How you wanna handle this?
Townsend: Put Sagan on the police scanners and have him give us a timeframe. If weāre going to do this, itās gonna have to happen fast ā and happen now.
Ā
Chief Russell: I just spoke to County. Theyāre sending units now. Gonna take Anne to Emporia and hold her there until we have a better handle on this.
Red: You canāt wait for units. You need to get her out of here now.
Officer Pembry: Feds are 20 minutes out.
āā
Anne: How could you not tell me? I let you into my life, my home.
Red: I never wanted to draw you into my life, Anne. I only wanted to escape into yours.
Anne: How selfish ā You getting involved with me while knowing all of this was hanging over us.
Red: I let my feelings for you cloud my judgment. I am so sorry.
[ She slaps him ]
Red: [ Grunts ]
Anne: When this is overā so are we.
[ She walks away ]
āā
Officer Pembry: Chief, take a look at this. That second SUV moved. It repositioned around back.
Officer Brandt: We have a third out front now.
[ Neville Townsend peers out of a window of the third SUV ]
[ Telephone ringing āļø ] [ Chief Russell puts the phone on speaker ]
Chief Russell: Cottonwood Falls Police. Chief Russell.
Neville Townsend: Chief! How wonderful. I presume youāre the man in charge.
Chief Russell: I am. Who is this?
Townsend: I am the one who is here for Mr. Reddington. Iām confident heās explained the situation to you by now. You also know the closest units are nine minutes out, which gives me eight minutes to acquire my prisoner. Send him out now, you live. Surrender and walk away, you live. Stay and protect him, and we kill everyone who stands in our path. You have 60 seconds to send him out.
Chief Russell: Okay. Hold on. Letā Letās start with who am I speaking to?
Townsend: Fifty-five.
[ Men with assault rifles get out of the SUVs ]
Officer Brandt: Chief?
Townsend: Fifty.
Officer Brandt: These guys are heavily armed.
Lois: Theyāre surrounding the facility.
Chief Russell: Hold on. L-Look.
Red: [ Whispers ] Anne, get down.
[ Anne ducks behind the communications desk ]
Chief Russell: Why donāt I come outside and we can talk, have a conversation?
Townsend: Forty-five.
Chief Russell: You still there? Can you hear me? Look. I donāt care who you are. Iām not gonna bend to your demands, and Iām certainly not gonna send a man to his death, even if he is a known criminal. What I will do is talk to you until we come up with some reasonable comproā
[ Gunshot š„] [ ā”ļøGlass shattersā”ļø ] [ Vandyke shoots Chief Russell through the head ]
Lois: Chief!
Townsend: [ Sighs ] That was unfortunate. But letās hope whoever is second-in-command can be more reasonable. Send out Reddington.
Red: [ To Lois ] Now youāre in charge.
Ā
[ Everyone in the police station is crouching. Brandt and Pembry make calls ]
Officer Brandt: [ On phone ] Shots fired. Repeat. Shots fired.
Officer Pembry: [ On phone ] We have active shooters on site. Officer down. Requesting backup.
Officer Brandt: We got state troopers east of Elmdale headed our way. County units are still eight minutes out.
Red: If you have a weapons cache, open it. We need to take positions and push them back now.
Officer Brandt: Iām not giving you a weapon.
Red: Staying alive until backup arrives is the only thing you can do.
Officer Brandt: No. You know what I can do? End this by giving them what they want.
Lois: What does that mean?
Officer Brandt: Look.
Lois: Stop! Weāre not sending him out there to be massacred.
Officer Brandt: I am not protecting him!
Lois: Hold on!
Red: Keep your heads down.
Officer Pembry: Sheās right, Brandt. We canāt send him out there. Theyāll kill him.
Lois: Just let me think this through.
Officer Brandt: What is there to think about?! I am not dying for him. The Chief already did that.
Lois: Brandt, stop!
Red: Do not go out that door.
[ Officer Brandt goes out ]
Ā
Officer Brandt: Iām coming out! Iām unarmed! You can see that, right? No games. I just want to walk away.
[ Rapid machine-gun fire š„š„š„ š„š„š„ ]
Officer Brandt: Oh!
Anne: [ āµGaspsāµ]
[ Telephone ringing āļø ] [ Lois picks up and puts the phone on speaker ]
Lois: That man has two children!
Townsend: I thought police understood rules. I told you the rules. You donāt get to change your mind. I gave you 60 seconds to send Reddington out. You ignored me, so now Iām coming in. The only thing that can stop that is sending Reddington out. āā No? Okay. Be right there.
Ā
Red: You need to uncuff me. Lois, I can give them what they want. You need to uncuff me.
Lois: Iāll uncuff you, but youāre not going out there.
Anne: No. What are you doing? You canāt!
[ Lois unlocks the weapons cache ]
Lois: Annie, heās Raymond Reddington. If weāre gonna survive this, heās the only chance weāve got. [ To Red: ] Iām removing these cuffs, but so help me God, if we get out of here alive, I am arresting you. If you try to escape, Iāll shoot you. Do you understand?
[ Lois gives Red and Pembry assault rifles ]
Red: Given the circumstances, thatās not much of a threat. But, yes, I understand. Maybe we should give Anne a sidearm.
Anne: I donāt want one.
Red: It could save your life.
Lois: Give it to her.
āā
Lois: This is for our defense only. If this building is breached, and only if itās breached, you have my authorization toā
[ Ignoring Lois, Red shoots š„š„š„] [ š„š„š„ Gun fight š„š„š„]
Officer Pembry: Chase County Sheriff, this is Officer Ethan Pembry. How far are those units?
[ š„š„š„ Gunfire š„š„š„ ]
[ Officer Pembry is shot through the chest ]
Officer Pembry: [ Grunts ]
[ š„š„š„ Gunfire š„š„š„ ]
Red: The detention cell! ā Is it fully enclosed?
Lois: It is, but we canāt access it!
Red: What? Why not?
Lois: I donāt have the keys. Brandt does.
Red: Brandt?
Lois: I can get them.
Red: No, no, no!
Lois: We have to!
Red: Itās too dangerous!
Anne: No, Lois! No!
[ Red runs to try to stop Lois ]
Red: No, no, no!
[ Lois goes out of the door, gets to Brandtās body and gets the keys ]
[ š„š„š„ Gunfire š„š„š„ ]
[ Lois is shot in the thigh ]
Lois: Aah!
[ Red shoots š„š„ to provide cover and pulls Lois back inside ]
Lois: [ Groaning ]
Red: Get her to the holding cell.
Lois: [ Groaning ]
[ Lois stumbles ]
Lois: [ Screams ]
[ The keys fall on the floor ] [ Red helps Lois up ]
Red: There we go.
āā
[ Neville Townsend gets out of his SUV and walks toward the police station, guarded by a dozen or so heavily armed men ]
āā
[ Red, Lois and Anne make their way to the holding cell ]
Red: Keys. Where are the keys?
[ Anne dashes to get the keys and tosses them to Red ]
Anne: Here.
Ā
[ Red gets Lois into the holding cell; Anne follows, pulling the door shut ]
[ Townsendās men follow seconds behind them and shoot at the door ] [ š„š„š„ ]
[ The bullets bounce off the bulletproof glass ]
Red: Here.
[ He helps Lois onto a bench in the cell ]
Lois: Okay.
āā
[ Seconds later, Neville Townsend peers through the glass ]
Townsend: Well. Look what we have here. Three ducks in a barrel.
āā
Red: Anne. Keep your eyes on Lois.
[ Door knob rattling ]
āā
Townsend: Get the door off.
āā
Red: Just ignore him.
āā
Townsend: Heh! This certainly is interesting.
āā
Red: Give me your scarf.
[ Red fashions a tourniquet for Loisās leg ]
āā
[ Townsendās men begin removing the screws holding the lock panel on the door ] [ Drill whirring š]
[ Knocking on glass ]
Townsend: Mr. Reddington!
āā
Red: Take her hand.
āā
[ Knocking on glass ]
Townsend: Hello?
[ Drill whirring š]
āā
[ Red walks over to talk to Townsend face-to-face ]
Red: You should have left her out of this, Neville.
Townsend: Itās over.
Red: This was between us.
Townsend: Youāre coming with me, Raymond. Weāre ending this today. Here.
Red: Yes, Iād like to agree with you, but then weād both be wrong. So, in turn, how about this ā Take your men and your guns ā and your bloodshed ā and go. Then come find me when youāre ready, and Iāll show you the proper way to exact revenge.
[ šØ Sirens approaching šØ]
One of Townsendās Men: Sir? We need to go. Right now.
[ šØ Sirens approaching šØ]
[ Townsend and his men leave ]
Ā
Red: The medics will be here any minute. Keep pressure on the wound.
Anne: Mm-hmm.
Red: Iām sorry, Anne. I wish I belonged here with you, but I donāt.
Anne: [ Sighs ]
[ Red moves to leave ] [ Keys jingle āØ]
[ Lois pulls her gun out and points it at Red ]
Lois: No. Stop. I told you if we survived this, Iād arrest you. Youāre under arrest.
Ā

Lois: [ Nodding ] Yeah.

Agent Ramirez: FBI.
āŖ Punchline after punch line āŖ
[ Anne opens the door ]
Anne: She needs a doctor.
Agent Ramirez: [ Into radio ] Stationās clear. We need paramedics.
Anne: Did you find Reddington?
Agent Ramirez: He was here?
ā Clear!
Lois: I tried to stop him.
Anne: You didnāt find him?
Agent Ramirez: Not yet, but knowing he was here, weāll drop a net so wide, even he wonāt be able to escape.
Ā
[ Outside, Lois is on a stretcher. An EMT is examining her tourniquet ]
EMT: Who did this?
Lois: My friend.
EMT: [ To Anne ] Iām not sure where you learned this, friend, but you saved her life.
Agent Ramirez: Reddington was in town visiting you?
Anne: I didnāt know who he was.
Agent Ramirez: Iām told he came quite often.
Anne: Thatās right. He did.
Agent Ramirez: But you didnāt know who he was?
Anne: You mean, was my life so boring that I was willing to spice it up by dating an international fugitive? No. It was not. But it turns out it was boring enough for me to get suckered by an international fugitive into thinking he cared about me. Now that I know the truth, believe me, if I can help you find him, well, that would be my pleasure.
Agent Ramirez: Glad to hear it, because I have a lot of questions.
Anne: And Iāll answer every one, but I need to go home first.
Agent Ramirez: One of my men will accompany you.
Lois: Sheās a victim, not a suspect. Sheās also my oldest friend. I donāt want you hounding her.
Anne: I just need to shower, change, and have a good cry. And then Iāll answer anything you want to ask.
Lois: My carās in the lot. Mind taking it home?
Anne: Of course not. Iāll be at the hospital just as soon as Iāve answered their questions.
Lois: I wish weād caught him. But knowing heās out of your life, I do get some satisfaction in that.
Ā

[ Flashback: ]
Lois: [ To Red ] I told you if we survived this, Iād arrest you. Youāre under arrest. Anne watched you kill someone. I saw you kill three more.
Red: Weāre alive because of that.
Lois: Not my chief. Not Pembry or Brandt. Theyāre dead because of you.
Red: I kept telling them what they needed to do, and they didnāt do it.
Anne: You were right. About him. The wolf in sheepās clothing. But you were wrong, too.
Lois: Anne, donāt.
[ Anne stands between Lois and Red ]
Anne: You donāt understand.
Lois: You need to move!

Red: Sheās a good friend.
Anne: The best. The man who came after you todayā
Red: Neville Townsend.
Anne: He wonāt stop, will he?
Red: You were right. At the station. Us, getting involved. It was selfish of me. It put you in harmās way. It still puts you there.
Anne: If Iām in trouble either way, why canāt we be together?
Red: Because what I have to do and how I have to do it, you canāt be a part of that. No one should be a part of that.
[ They kiss, embrace ]
Red: It wonāt be safe here until itās done.
Anne: I understand.
Red: Is there somewhere you can go? And not to your daughterās. Theyāll anticipate that.
Anne: My friend Cindi, the one who made the cake. She has a cabin.
Red: Call her. See if you can go there. When itās safe, youāll receive a postcard. Itāll be from the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota. Thatās how youāll know itās me.
Red: But you donāt know the address. I have certain ā capabilities.
Anne: Too bad staying awake for a movie isnāt one of them.
Red: [ Laughs ] Ahh ā Thank you.
Anne: For what?
Red: For ā all of it. Everyā Every bit of it. Except the bridge. Of all the things that happened on this trip, the bridge scared me the most.
Anne: Take care, Dummy.
Red: You take care, Anne.

Trivia: Whenās the last time Red turns the sound in a car to be happily surprised at what comes on? If Iām not mistaken, it was this scene from Episode 2:12 The Kenyon Family (left; similar scene in 8:13 Anne on the right):
Ā
Ā
In that Season 2 episode, Red had somehow gained access to a Presidential limo and had buried it underground in a shipping container. (In the trunk was a component of the Fulcrum, which was, like the Sikorsky Archive, a blackmail file.) The song that came on was Bobby Darin singing ā« Beyond The Sea, a song about a lover far away and the dream of reuniting with her at some distant time. I tweeted at the time: š£ āBeyond the Seaā contrasts w Redās Navy past & sailing theme in Anslo Garrick [1:9]: freedom v āhome.ā
Here are the lyrics and bonus YouTube video for that song:
ā« Beyond The Sea
Sung by Bobby DarināŖ Somewhere beyond the sea
Somewhere waiting for me
My lover stands on golden sands
And watches the ships that go sailingāŖ Somewhere beyond the sea
Sheās there watching for me
If I could fly like birds on high
Then straight to her arms
Iād go sailingāŖ Itās far beyond the stars
Itās near beyond the moon
I know beyond a doubt
My heart will lead me there soonāŖ Weāll meet beyond the shore
Weāll kiss just as before
Happy weāll be beyond the sea
And never again Iāll go sailingāŖ I know beyond a doubt
My heart will lead me there soon
Weāll meet (I know weāll meet) beyond the shore
Weāll kiss just as before
Happy weāll be beyond the sea
And never again Iāll go sailingāŖ No more sailing
So long sailing
Bye, bye sailing
