š“ Script 8:11 Captain Kidd (ā 69)
Brief (Where weāre at):
Neville Townsend, the man who had put a bounty on Katarina Rostovaās head and is now working with Liz to bring down Red, has just lost his torture master. Pain fetishist Dr Laken Perillos (Blacklister #70) had helped Townsend cement his empire of cartels and smugglers together. She is now in the custody of the FBI. Conversely, Redās munitions expert, Max Ruddiger, has been turned and is now āownedā by Townsend. First Dembe and then Red were tortured by Dr Perillos. Both showed themselves willing to sacrifice themselves for the other. Townsendās claimed interest in having Dembe and Red tortured was to find out about the Sikorsky Archive. He got no answers from either.
The Archive is in the possession of a man referred to by Red and Dembe as āOur friend in the Eastā who Red meets with occasionally in Moscow. Hereās part of the scene from Episode 8:1 Roanoke in which Lizās mother, Katarina Rostova (Blacklister #3), describes the Sikorsky Archive and N-13:
Katarina: What do you know about N-13?
Liz: N-13? I donāt know what that is.
Katarina: Not a what. A who. N-13 is an operative. The āNā stands for āneopoznanny,ā the Russian word for āunidentified.ā 13 represents the 13 packets of intel he stole from Lubyanka Square in 1990.
Liz: Youāre talking about a KGB mole?
Katarina: One whose identity remains unknown. A turncoat who was never proven to exist. 30 years of hunting, and still no one knows.
Liz: N-13 is still active?
Katarina: Depending on who you ask. The CIA, MSS, MI5, the Mossad ā all believe he continues to cypher some of their most damaging intel.
Liz: From other governments? Why? To what end?
Katarina: To build a compromising file.
Liz: The Sikorsky Archive. You said itās a blackmail file.
Katarina: One that started with 13 intel packets over 30 years ago and has been evolving ever since.
Liz: Thatās why there was a bounty on your head.
Katarina: Yes. Because Dom set me up. He leaked to the KGB that I was N-13, that the dossier Ilya asked me to deliver that night was the elusive Archive.
Liz: They framed you.
Katarina: And tried to murder me before the truth could be known.
Liz: Why? Who were they protecting?
Katarina: [ Chuckles ]
Liz: What? You think Reddington is N-13?
Katarina: Or Dom. Or both. I believe Dom framed me so everyone would stop looking for N-13. Had I died that night, they would have.
Liz: But you didnāt. Thatās why youāre still on the run.
Katarina: Wrongly accused. Hunted for a crime I didnāt commit.
Liz: So N-13 ā Reddington ā is a mole.
Katarina: Who has manipulated you to gain access to top U.S. intelligence. Masha, Reddington didnāt choose you. He needed you. He traded on the questions you have about your past to gain immunity. He gives you criminals, and in exchange, he learns the names of every high-level official working in American justice, law enforcement, and intelligence.
Liz: So this whole time Reddingtonās been using me, the Task Force has been this Trojan horse heās been using to obtain classified intel.
Katarina: A father figure is trying to manipulate you the way my father manipulated me. Dom is lying about me. I am not N-13. I do not have the Archive. But unless I get him to tell me who does ā To give me proof that I can show the world ā I will be killed. So Katarina had Liz kidnap Dom from one of Redās āwarehospitalsā and subjected him to psychological torture. Dom confessed that Red is N-13. Katarina attempted to convey this information to Townsend to call off the bounty, but Red got to her first and shot and killed her. But she left a recording of her last conversation with Red on a cellphone call to Liz in which he tacitly admits he is indeed N-13. Now, Liz has teamed up with Townsend to go after Red.
Liz also shared the recording with Cooper, who has been doing some investigating of his own. He has been talking to the Chair of the US House of Representatives Intelligence Committee which had been doing its own investigation into N-13 ā that is until all of its files on N-13 were wiped out by Redās computer whiz kid, Tadashi Ito. The files were linked to a protĆ©gĆ© of Redās named Rakitin who is deeply embedded in the US Intelligence Community under the name of Andrew Patterson. Rakitin tried to take the heat off of himself by staging the fake suicide of another person of interest, but the task force figured it out quickly, as Red warned Rakitin would happen.
Why Townsend who runs a criminal enterprise similar to Redās is so interested in government secrets remains unclear, but he also blames Red for killing his family. Red told Townsend Katarina killed Townsendās family and since he killed her, they should ābe able to co-exist.ā Red knows itās really Liz out for revenge for killing Katarina who wants him dead.

[ An initiation ceremony into the āPoe Societyā is taking place in an abandoned house ]
[ The Storyteller, a boy about 12 years old, reads from Edgar Allan Poeās tale, āThe Tell-Tale Heart.ā Three other boys listen in a darkened room, including a nervous Initiate ]
Storyteller: āThere was no reason for what I did. I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. For his gold I had no desire. I think it was his eye. He had the eye of a vulture.ā
[ The Storyteller makes direct eye contact with the Initiate, who looks frightened but trying to hide it ]
Storyteller: āWhenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold, and so I made up my mind to kill the old man, and rid myself from the eye forever. Every night I looked in upon him while he slept. Until the old manās hour had come. With a loud yell, I leaped into the room. He shrieked once. But in an instant, I dragged him to the floor and pulled the heavy bed over him.ā
āā
[ Another boy, Jimmy, is in the cellar. He has a flashlight and a pole ]
āā
Storyteller: āStone dead. I dismembered the corpse. I cut off the head, the arms, and the legs. But, before long, my head ached. I fancied a ringing in my ear. The noise increased, a low, dull, quick sound.ā
āā
[ Jimmy taps on the ceiling of the cellar with the pole, adding drama to the reading above ] [ Knocking ]
āā
Storyteller: āI gasped for breath, but the noise steadily increased.ā
āā
[ Knocking continues as Jimmy taps the ceiling ] [ Some dust and white granules fall on Jimmy ]
āā
Storyteller: āI paced the floor to and fro. I foamed, I raved, I swore! I swung the chair above the bed over him. But the noise increased.ā
āā
[ Jimmy taps some more; more dust and granules fall on him ]
Jimmy: [ Coughs ]
āā
Storyteller: āIt grew louder.ā
āā
[ Knocking ]
āā
Storyteller: āLouderā¦ā
āā
[ Louder knocking ]
āā
Storyteller: āLouder.ā
āā
[ Louder knocking ]
āā
Storyteller: āHere, here! It is the beating of his hideous heart.ā
āā
[ Rhythm of a heart beating ] [ The candle lighting the dark rests on a human skull ]
āā
[ Three boys gather without the Initiate ]
Boy #1: Did you see his face? I swear, I thought he was gonna have a heart attack.
Boy #2: How much timeās left?
Storyteller: Four minutes.
Boy #2: I say we go in now before he has an actual heart attack.
Storyteller: He knew the rules. Besides, you canāt be afraid of the dark and be in the Poe Society.
āā
[ The boys peer into the cellar. Jimmy has collapsed on the cellar stairs, struggling ]
Boy #1: Jimmy, yo, everything okay down there?
Jimmy: [ Coughing ] Help! [ Groaning ] Help me!
Boy: What?
Storyteller: Call 911!
Jimmy: [ Gasping, choking, vomiting ]
Ā
[ The Post Office ] [ The dossiers of four US intelligence analysts lie on a table. The task force has been investigating whether one of them is the operative code-named Rakitin, who they suspect has been passing classified intelligence to Red ]
Aram: If one of these four guys is Rakitin, I canāt prove it.
Cooper: You accessed their hard drives, data profile?
Aram: I did. CIA, DIA, State. If one of these analysts is leaking intel, I couldnāt tell you how.
Cooper: Which tells me that however cautious Rakitin was being before, heās being that much more cautious now. I want them followed. Tell Park to pull whatever resources she needs to get eyes on all four. I have to meet Reddington.
Ā
[ Cooper and Red sit across from one another at a table in the Post Office ]
Red: Captain Kidd.
Cooper: The pirate.
Red: The only pirate who actually buried his treasure. Along the coast of East Hampton. The irony abounds.
[ A newspaper headline reads: āLocal Boy In ICU After Mysterious Fentanyl Overdoseā ]
Cooper: Weāre talking about a childās overdose.
Red: Yes. On buried treasure.
Cooper: Fentanyl.
Red: That he thought was nothing more than dust. An innocent and tragic mistake that confirms my decision as to the next name on the Blacklist.
Cooper: Captain Kidd.
Ā
[ A man in his late 20s or early 30s, Captain Kidd stands with two of his assistants listening to a dissatisfied client ]
Client: Your drop site is swarming with cops. They could trace the drugs back to me. You promised me.
Captain Kidd: I promised you, like I promise all of my customers, a safe drop. Ted here screwed that up.
I want you to know Ted wonāt screw up again.
[ The man behind Ted covers Tedās head with a plastic bag and suffocates him on the spot ]
[ Ted gasping ]
Ā
Red: Captain Kidd is a glorified middle man who facilitates criminal transactions by guaranteeing payment, pickup, and delivery between otherwise warring factions.
Cooper: By using hidden treasure.
Red: GPS-tagged hiding spots.
Cooper: Like an abandoned house where he can hide drugs where no one can find them. Except for a group of kids.
Red: He takes possession of an item for sale, hides it, and informs the buyer of its location once payment has been made in the same fashion.
Cooper: Like geocaching for narcotics.
Red: Narcotics. Or contraband. Or people.
Cooper: He hides people?
Red: Yes, which is why this case is of some urgency.
Cooper: Are you telling me that someoneās been abducted?
Red: Not yet, but I believe she will be if we donāt act quickly.
Cooper: Who?
Red: Safiya Maroun.
Ā
[ Cooper briefs the task force ]
Cooper: Was born in Riyadh. In 2006, she was committed to a mental institution for defying her male guardianās wishes. Later that year, she was granted asylum in America and has since become one of the most prominent opponents of Saudi Arabian repression and is the founder of Brighter Path, an organization that helps get women and people in the LGBTQā community out of countries with oppressive regimes.
Aram: The womanās a hero.
Cooper: And a target.
Ressler: Of Neville Townsend.
Cooper: According to Reddington, Townsendās been contracted by the Saudi secret police to abduct Maroun from her home in Maryland. Iāve notified Hyattsville PD. I want you to meet them on-site.
Aram: Has anyone spoken to Maroun?
Cooper: I tried, but itās late. Could be her phoneās turned off.
āā
[ Men with assault rifles disable the alarm system and enter Safiya Marounās home ]
Safiya: [ Screaming ] Donāt hurt me! No! No! Get off me!
[ One of the intruders hits Safiyaās husband in the head with the butt of his rifle, splattering blood; he rolls out of the bed. They leave with Safiya ]
āā
Neville Townsend: [ On phone ] I just heard from my people. Itās done. Sheāll be here within the hour.
Ā
Ressler: But what if weāre too late?
Cooper: According to Reddington, sheāll be buried alive until Saudi Secret Service pays Townsend.
Aram: At which point, this Captain Kidd will give them the GPS coordinates so the Mabahith can dig her up and kill her.
Cooper: Thatās right. So donāt be late.
[ Cooper leaves ]
Ressler: Whereās Park?
Aram: Hunting down Rakitin.
Ressler: Why, so he can confirm Reddingtonās a Russian plant?
Aram: Mr. Reddingtonās a traitor, Agent Keenās thrown in with a man who abducts human rights activists, and weāre hunting for a pirate that buries people alive. Sometimes I think I never shouldāve left the circus.
[ Ressler looks askance at Aram ] [ Elevator door closes ]
Ā
[ Outside Safiya Marounās house ] [ Police radio chatter ]
Ressler: [ Sighs ] So much for not being too late.
[ Inside, crime scene investigators are at work. On Sofiyaās bed are evidence markers and a bloody pillow ]
Aram: Has the husband made a statement?
Uniformed Cop: Not yet. Heās still in surgery.
Ressler: What about neighbors or a passerby? Anybody see anything?
Uniformed Cop: Afraid not.
[ On the floor, āNORAā is written in blood ]
Aram: Maybe this is his statement.
Ressler: Whoās Nora?
Uniformed Cop: Eleanor, the oldest daughter. First we thought maybe the girl got taken, too. But she and her sister are both accounted for.
Ressler: His wifeās been abducted, he doesnāt know by whom, and he uses what little strength he has to write his daughterās name. Why?
Aram: Maybe because itās not a name.
[ He walks over to a home surveillance system ]
Uniformed Cop: Kidnappers disarmed the system.
Aram: Iām sure they did, to avoid tripping the alarm.
Ressler: And to prevent the abduction from being videotaped.
[ Aram keys in āNORAā for the password. It works ]
Aram: Yes. But what Iām interested in is what happened before the abduction.
[ Aram backs up the feed to before the home invasion. A vehicle is seen approaching ]
Aram: Hello. Who might you be?
Ressler: [ On radio ] I need an APB on a late-model Escalade, grey, no plates.
Ā
[ Safiya Maroun is brought before Captain Kidd ]
Captain Kidd: I read up on you. Iām a fan of your work.
Safiya: Iām begging you, please.
Captain Kidd: Nothing will happen to you on my watch.
Safiya: Please donāt do this!
Captain Kidd: You will have plenty of air, nice warm clothes. Just breathe easily and this part will be over soon, all right?
Safiya: Donāt do this! Stop! Donāt do this!
[ An oxygen mask is placed over Safiyaās mouth. Two men force Safiya to get into a large crate ]
Safiya: [ Muffled shouting ]
[ The cover is placed on the crate and it is screwed on ] [ Drill whirring ]
[ Neville Townsend steps out ]
Captain Kidd: I mean it. Sheās an inspiration.
Townsend: Which is exactly what the royal family fears.
Captain Kidd: Making her a martyr will only make her more inspirational. More people will take her place.
Townsend: I hope so. The Royal Family pays top dollar to make their competition disappear.
Safiya: [ Muffled ] Donāt do this! [ Banging ]
Ā
[ Rakitin, aka Andrew Patterson, walks along a sidewalk ]
Rakitin: [ On phone ] Hey, itās me. I have something you may be interested in.
Red: Opera? Aliens? Freeganism? Iām interested in any number of topics, most anything. Except accounting. This isnāt about accounting, is it?
Rakitin: Itās about the intercept out of China. The pending cyberattack.
Red: I am interested.
Rakitin: Well, then we should talk. How about the fountains? Meridian Hill?
Red: Iād prefer something a little more intimate. Come to the restaurant. You remember, 3rd and North. Weāre closed for renovations, so I can promise us a quiet corner.
Ā
[ Cooperās office ]
Cooper: Agent Mojtabai, weāve been looking for you. Whereāve you been?
Aram: Itās, uh, sort of a long story.
Cooper: I hope it has a happy ending, because we found the grey Escalade from Marounās abduction. It was abandoned and scrubbed.
Aram: And the husband?
Cooper: Ressler questioned him at County where heās recovering. He doesnāt know anything.
Aram: Well, um, I might. Uh, I reached out to Cyber Crime to provide us with a list of any online drug dealers who have informants that we could question about Captain Kidd or how heās distributing product using street-tech workarounds.
Cooper: I told you I spoke to DEA. They donāt have anything on Kidd.
Aram: Which is why I spent all night buying mephedrone, cocaine, and MDMA on the dark web.
[ Aram takes packages of drugs out of his backpack ]
Cooper: You bought illegal drugs online.
Aram: I did. Which was terrifying. However, on the upside, one of the dealers asked to meet near a taco truck in LeDroit Park that is totally worth the drive.
Cooper: Sounds delicious.
Aram: Oh, you have no idea, sir. They have a chicken mole that isā [ Reading Cooperās look ] Try and stay focused. Of the 16 dealers I purchased from, eight are shipping to me directly. Seven met to hand off in person.
Cooper: And the last one?
Aram: Just texted me, uh, coordinates, photos, and directions of where the drugs were dropped.
Cooper: Theyāre using Captain Kidd.
Aram: Itās a geo-tagged hiding spot in Penn Quarter.
Cooper: Take Ressler. Pull the drugs, along with any surveillance feeds of the area. Letās hope your online shopping spree turns up more than great chicken mole.
Ā
[ Inside the crate, Safiya tries to use her cell phone ] [ Dialing ] [š
Beepingš
] [ Sobbing ]
Ā
[ Inside his car, Rakitin gathers together some papers into a folder. He gets out of his car and starts walking. Some distance behind him, trailing him on the sidewalk, is Agent Alina Park. After a while, Rakitin senses her presense. He lifts his cell phone to catch an reflection of her. He makes a call ]
[ Dialing ] [ Line ringingāØ] [ Cellphone ringingāØ]
Red: Yes.
Rakitin: Gotta call it off.
Red: Why? Whatās going on?
Rakitin: I got a tail. Iāll call you back.
[ Rakitin doubles back, walking past Agent Park. He continues on until he comes to a corner. Once around the corner, he runs, then ducks into a doorway. He locks the door behind him. Park follows, but finds the door locked. Rakitin takes another exit out of the building. He finds Parkās car and takes a photo of the government license plate ] [ Camera shutter clicks ]
Ā
[ Ressler and Aram have found the location of the drug drop Aram arranged, but there are no drugs ]
Ressler: Sure this is the right location?
Aram: Look at the photo. Instructions said back corner of the park, third light post from the south. Itās supposed to be inside the broken solar assembly. You think someone else found it?
Ressler: Well, maybe they knew it was a setup and got cold feet.
Aram: Thereās no surveillance, no obvious cameras.
Ressler: They chose this location because itās a digital dark spot.
Aram: Oh, my God. What if somebody else found those drugs? What ifā What if a child found those drugs?
Ressler: Hey, check it out.
[ He points to a line of waiting cabs ]
Aram: I donāt get it. You think Captain Kidd took a cab here?
Ressler: No, I think that cab took Captain Kiddās picture.
Ā
[ The Post Office ] [ Cooper, Ressler and Aram review camera footage from one of the cabs ]
Ressler: The driver at South Cab didnāt witness anything, but his dash cam caught the end of the drop.
Cooper: White male, late 20s. Is the image strong enough for facial recognition?
Aram: Resolution isnāt the problem. We just donāt have a viable angle, and itās only these 22 seconds.
Ressler: The cab only caught the end. I mean, the kid walks out of frame and thatās it.
Cooper: Whatās that? The cup in his hand.
[ Keyboard clacking ] [ Aram enlarges the cup ]
Aram: āKittās Coffee.ā Oh, they make a mean mochaccino.
Ressler: Theyāre also local. They only have a few locations in the city.
Cooper: Pull the sales records and the surveillance feeds from any of their stores in a mile radius. If the kid paid with a credit card, then chances are weāve got his physical address. Get it and get him here.
Ā
[ Ressler interrogates the suspect, a teenage boy named Jarret Moore. He has an attorney ]
Attorney:You canāt prove that my client is the person in that footage.
Ressler: [ To Jarret ] We know you work for Captain Kidd.
Jarret Moore: I donāt. I told you.
Ressler: Yeah, whatās gonna happen when we pull your prints off the drugs we found in the park? Or the drugs we find in your apartment?
Attorney: Mr. Moore isnāt responding toā
Ressler: Mr. Moore is going to jail.
Jarret: Okay, look, Iām telling the truth. Okay? Iā Heāsā Heās not my employer. I donāt work for Kidd. Iāve been robbing him.
Ressler: Robbing him of what?
Jarret: Look, itās all kinds of stuff. Itās, uh, weapons, stolen credit cards, fake IDs.
Ressler: Narcotics?
Jarret: Yeah, narcotics.
Attorney: Allegedly narcotics.
Jarret: Itās not just me. Itās not like Iām the only Seeker.
Ressler: Whatās a Seeker?
Attorney: You do not have to answer that.
Ressler: Explain to your poorly prepared mouthpiece here that Iām gonna have officers and a warrant at your residence before you even walk out of this door. You need to cooperate if you want to have any hope of staying out of jail. [ To the Attorney ] Can you tell him that?
Attorney: Go ahead, Jarret.
Jarret: Captain Kidd uses droppers to stash his product. How much product, how many droppers, I donāt know, but itās a lot. We track what we can, follow a dropper, look for his stash.
Ressler: We know it was drugs you stole from that stash in the park, and I got a feeling that a drug test will prove theyāre in your system right now.
Attorney: Whoa, hold on.
Ressler: What if I were able to forget about that drug test?
Attorney: In exchange forā
Ressler: You hand over whatever contraband you have on hand. Whatever you stole from these GPS-tagged hiding spots. If that evidence helps me find Captain Kidd, well, maybe Iāll help you stay out of jail.
Ā
[ Rakitin, aka Andrew Patterson, meets with Red in the kitchen of his restaurant ]
Red: What the hell happened?
Rakitin: Iāll tell you what happened. I was tailed by the FBI.
[ Rakitin shows Red the photo of Parkās license plate ]
Rakitin: This guy Cooper, he, uhā Heās not standing down like you said he would. You need to do something about him.
Ā
[ An FBI crime laboratory ]
Ressler: Hey. Came as quick as I could. Whatās so urgent?
FBI Lab Tech: Well, I ran a test on the narcotics you pulled from Mooreās apartment.
Ressler: Yeah, that he stole from the park.
FBI Lab Tech: Yes, and we got an interesting hit. Chemical analysis showed it contained powdered milk.
Ressler: The cutting agent?
FBI Lab Tech: Notable because itās a favorite of the Guayabo cartel. MPD picked up one of their dealers last month, so I called to get a sample from the evidence locker to confirm the samples matched, butā
Ressler: They didnāt.
FBI Lab Tech: Not only donāt they match, but the sample we got from the city wasnāt drugs. It was 100% baking soda.
Ressler: So MPD seized fake drugs?
FBI Lab Tech: No. Their paperwork certifies that the contents of the seizure was heroin cut with powdered milk at the time of testing. But between testing and now, someone took the drugs and left baking soda behind.
Ressler: Between now and then? I mean, who had access to the drugs in lockup?
FBI Lab Tech: No one. Evidence log shows it was never touched. The case against the cartel is still being built, so it hasnāt gone to trial yet. The drugs were never checked out of evidence or brought to a courtroom.
Ressler: So, heroin went into lockup and baking soda came out.
FBI Lab Tech: The last person to touch those drugs, the only person to handle them, would be the drug lab chemist who tested them for the city.
Ressler: Whoās that?
FBI Lab Tech: His nameās Tyler Schwartz. Heās been with MPD for just under five years.
Ressler: Thank you.
Ā
Rakitin: You donāt understand how close we came. If I hadnāt made the tailā
Red: But you did.
Rakitin: āshe would have exposed us both.
Red: But she didnāt. I thought this was about some intercept out of China. The impending cyberattack.
Rakitin: Are you even listening to me?
Red: Keenly, in the vain hope of hearing about this Chinese intercept.
Rakitin: [ Emphatically ] The Bureau is following me, which means they are following you.
[ Rakitin stands up ]
Rakitin: This whole thing is about to blow up and expose us both.
Red: Somehow I donāt find your fevered disposition to be infectious, Andrew.
Rakitin: My fevered disā Whatā What is wrong with you? I am trying toā to dig us out of this mess.
Red: No, what you are doing is a rather obvious and ineffectual dance to cover your tracks. You killed an innocent man, Andrew. You faked your death to divert Harold Cooper, and as a result, youāve only made matters worse. Now, I told you Iād handle Cooperā
Rakitin: Are you kidding me?
Red: āwhich I will do. But Harold Cooper is no fool, and your theatrics only confirm his belief that heās being played. So stand back. Iāll handle this.
Rakitin: Okay, just back up a second. How about, uhā How about āthank youā for picking up his tail? How about āthank youā for not leading the FBI directly to you, and thus to Moscow? How aboutā
[ Red stands up ]
Red: [ Angrily ] How about I break your jaw, wire it shut, and force-feed blended cheeseburgers into your belly until you burst? āā How about? āā No? Then shut the hell up and listen. I told you I would handle Harold Cooper, and I will do just that. What you need to do is keep your mouth shut, your head down, and assure Moscow that the situation is under control. Now, please, go away before this becomes decidedly more uncivil.
Ā
[ Ressler has Tyler Schwartz in an interrogation room. Heās the FBI Lab Chemist who removed the narcotics from the drug evidence he tested ]
Ressler: Well, the evidence was logged by MPD and sent to the lab where you work. I mean, youāre the chemist on record.
Tyler Schwartz: I understand that.
Ressler: So help me understand how drug evidence that the police took off the street, drugs that you tested in your lab, somehow got swapped with baking soda.
Schwartz: I should wait for my lawyer.
Ressler: Tyler, your lawyer canāt stop us from re-testing every sample youāve examined and verified. And when we do, weāre gonna find out theyāre all fake. Now, if you help usā
Schwartz: I donāt know what to say.
Ressler: What happened to those drugs?
Schwartz: Itās not just me! Itās Williams. Goebel.
Ressler: What happens to the drugs, Tyler?
Schwartz: Our facility handles hundreds of samples every week, all kinds of drugs from all over the city.
Ressler: Evidence you personally handle.
Schwartz: Once we run our chemical analysis to legally confirm theyāre what the police say they are, the cases go to trial supported by the lab certification. But the drug evidence, it goes back into the vault. Nobodyās supposed to test it again.
Ressler: Youāre stealing and re-selling drug evidence.
Schwartz: Like I said, Iām not the only one. Thereās an entire network.
Ressler: With a distribution system.
Schwartz: I already said too much.
Ressler: We know youāre using Captain Kidd. Thatās who weāre after here, and youāre gonna help us find him.
Schwartz: I canāt do that.
Ressler: You can if you wanna help yourself. Tyler, look at me. How do we find Captain Kidd?
Ā
[ Safiya Maroun remains trapped in a buried crate, breathing oxygen from a tank ]
Safiya Maroun: [ Gasping ]
āā
[ The headquarters of Captain Kidd ]
Tech: Iāve got both online. Go ahead.
Captain Kidd: Do I have the buyer on the line?
Al-Harbi: [ Arabic accent ] Yes, we are here.
Captain Kidd: Do I have the seller on the line?
Neville Townsend: Yes.
Captain Kidd: Seller, can you confirm that the transaction is at least 100 blocks deep on the Blockchain, as per our instructions?
Townsend: I can.
Captain Kidd: Seller, do I have your consent to release the package to the buyer?
Townsend: You do.
Captain Kidd: Buyer, Iām sending you an encrypted file with your GPS-tagged identifier now. This will include photos and verbal instructions you can use to identify the drop site. āā Gentlemen, while we wait, I want to thank you for your patronage.
āā
Safiya: [ Gasping ]
[ Safiya bangs on the crate ]
āā
[ Photos and maps appear on Al-Harbiās laptop ]
Al-Harbi: We have it.
Captain Kidd: Is that your official confirmation?
Al-Harbi: It is.
Captain Kidd: In that case, transaction 49r83 is complete. Gentlemen, again, thank you for your business and good day.
[ Conference call ends ]
Captain Kidd: [ To Tech ] Tell Penny weāre funded. Have her notify Nicosia. And, uh, send someone out for lumpia and a Mello Yello. I swear, I could eat a horse.
[ Banging in distance ]
Tech: What was that?
Captain Kidd: What? I donāt hear anyā
Tech: Shh, there. Sounds likeā
[ An FBI TAC team bursts in ]

[ The Post Office ]
Cooper: Print back yet on Kidd?
Aram: Oh, uh, I just got them. That is, uhā Thatās the good news.
Cooper: Iām listening.
Aram: I heard from Agent Park. She was following one of the Rakitin suspects, Andrew Patterson, the analyst from the Office of Intelligence and Analysis.
Cooper: Walk with me.
Aram: Agent Park thinks that Patterson made her.
Cooper: And the other suspects?
Aram: Surveillance turned up nothing on the other three.
Cooper: Day in the life. Then we pick it up again tomorrow.
Aram: Yeah, hereās the thing, Agent Park doesnāt think that will be necessary.
Cooper: Oh? And why is that?
Aram: She thinks Patterson is the one weāre looking for. Mr. Reddingtonās source.
Cooper: Because he gave her the slip? That proves heās smart, not treasonous.
Aram: Itās not that he gave her the slip. The bad news is where he gave her the slip.
Cooper: And where was that?
Aram: Corner of 3rd and North. Near Mr. Reddingtonās restaurant.
Ā
[ Ressler interrogates Captain Kidd ]
Ressler: Well, how we know about you isnāt important. What matters is that we do. We know about your geocaching, how you hide drugs and people. Safiya Maroun. Tell me about her.
Captain Kidd: Never heard of her.
Ressler: Looky here, your prints came back a match to a William Benedict. Tied to a low-rent smuggling operation back in 2014. Well, youāve come a long way since then, huh?
Captain Kidd: If you say so.
Ressler: Safiya Maroun. Where is she?
Captain Kidd: I havenāt the foggiest.
Ressler: Thereās a kid in the ICU at County. Heās 13 years old. He overdosed on the fentanyl that you stashed in that house in the Southeast. Now, best-case scenario for you, I think thatās attempted voluntary manslaughter.
Captain Kidd: Like I said, I have no idea what youāre talking about.
Ressler: Well, your MPD partners in crime have turned on you. Theyāve given us sworn affidavits.
Captain Kidd: Yet here you are. And we both know why.
Ressler: Whereās Maroun?
Captain Kidd: Whereās my deal? You want to get, whatāre you gonna give?
[ Cooper walks forward ]
Cooper: Absolutely nothing. A womanās life hangs in the balance, a good woman. A heroic woman we are moving heaven and earth to try and save. But what we will not do, what I refuse to do, is to cut a deal with the likes of you to make that happen.
Captain Kidd: Then her blood is on your hands, not mine.
Cooper: Maybe, but I can live with that, knowing that youāll be spending the next 30 years taking showers with murderers and rapists.
[ Door opens ] [ Ressler and Cooper leave ]
Ā
Ressler: Okay, so what? Weāre sweating him now, right?
Cooper: No, weāre not sweating him. Weāre building a case against him. Then itās gonna be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Ressler: Yeah, but heās not gonna tell us how to find Maroun, not without a deal.
Cooper: No, heās not. But getting played by another criminal, being forced to look the other way to countenance their sicknessā
Ressler: Isnāt that part of the job?
Cooper: Yeah, part I hate he most.
[ Elevator door open. Red and Dembe step out ]
Cooper: Do what you can to get that scumbag to talk, but heās not getting a deal.
[ Ressler leaves ]
Ā
Red: I hear congratulations are in order. You have Captain Kidd.
Cooper: Is that why youāre here?
Red: Time is of the essence, Harold. If Safiya Maroun is ever to draw a breath of fresh air again, I suggest you let me have a chat with the Captain. Introduce him to Brimleyās badger.
Cooper: Your concern is noted, but we both know you didnāt come here just to offer your services.
Red: I came hoping people would speak the truth, Captain Kidd, us. Given your hypertension, perhaps we should go first.
Ā
[ Cooperās office ]
Cooper: We know about Andrew Patterson.
Red: Do tell.
Cooper: We know heās Rakitin, your source in the Intelligence Community. We suspected as much, so Park tailed him, to the corner of 3rd and North.
Red: Itās a lovely neighborhood. Fine place to go for a walk.
Cooper: Or for dinner. 3rd and North is half a block from your restaurant.
Red: Donāt do this, Harold.
Cooper: He was going to meet you to divulge classified intel.
Red: Iām asking you as a friend, not an adversary.
Cooper: A friend? I donāt have friends who betray this country.
Red: I understand your quandary. You care a great deal about Elizabeth. You want to believe in her, to understand and find reason in her quest to destroy me. But for what I hope is the final time, let me be clear. I am not a traitor to this country, and I do not divulge sensitive intelligence to this countryās enemies.
Cooper: I know thatās not true.
Red: No, Harold. You think you know. You have pieces of a puzzle that you think you can solve. But as I am the puzzle, I know that you canāt. And as your friend and your colleague, I implore you, for your own sake, to please let this go.
Cooper: Is that some sort of threat?
Red: Sincere advice. I have unsavory associates. When cornered, they tend to do unsavory things.
Cooper: Let me get this straight. Youāre not a Russian spy, and the person Park tailed isnāt supplying you intel. Iām on this wild goose chase ā and yet my life is in danger?
Red: You need to trust me on this.
Cooper: You mean I need to believe you over Elizabeth?
Red: That sounds as if youāre in contact with her.
Cooper: I wish. Sheās an apparition. A ghost who leaves clues in the night but is gone by morning. Youāve taught her well.
Red: Harold, this, all of it, is between her and me. She and I may not agree on much, but Iām sure we agree on this. Neither of us would be able to forgive ourselves if our problems caused you to become collateral damage.
Cooper: Iām glad weāve had this talk, and I appreciate your offer, but Iām confident we can get what we need from Captain Kidd without the assistance of Brimleyās badger.
[ Cooper walks out ]
Ā
[ Cooper walks up to Ressler ]
Cooper: Make the deal. Iāll get the AG on board.
Ressler: The deal? The one you said we werenāt gonna make?
Cooper: Full immunity.
Ressler: So, what happened with Reddington?
Cooper: You mean N-13?
Ressler: So you confronted him about Rakitin, about how he ditched Park?
Cooper: I donāt condone what Elizabethās doing, but if we have to pick sides in this war, I think itās past time we picked hers. We need to get to Keen before Reddington does, and because he works with Townsend, Captain Kidd can help us do that. I meant what I said about getting played by another criminal, but you were right. Itās what we do. So do it.
Ā
[ Captain Kidd has reviewed the immunity deal ]
Ressler: Let me help you with the fine print. You help, you walk.
Captain Kidd: Full immunity.
Ressler: For past crimes. You Jay-walk tomorrow, Iām coming for you.
Captain Kidd: Iāll help you with Maroun.
Ressler: No. And Townsend.
Captain Kidd: No. No way. Iām not crossing him.
Ressler: Well, thatās just the cost of doing business.
Captain Kidd: If I snitch on him, heāll find out.
Ressler: So what? Come on. Youāll be drinking mai tais in witness protection.
Captain Kidd: You canāt protect me. Not from him.
Ressler: Thatās a chance youāre just gonna have to take.
Ā
Ressler: So, how does it work? Walk me through the steps. I want you to bore me with every tiny little detail.
Captain Kidd: Our network, weāre justā Itās a delivery system, a series of dead drops in abandoned buildings or crowded public locations. We provide a layer of protection for the buyers and sellers of illicit goods. In this case, the parcel was acquired by Neville Townsend, taken to a holding site, then packaged and prepared for delivery by one of our splinter teams.
Ressler: Packaged and prepared?
Captain Kidd: Bro, this isnāt a stolen gun weāre talking about. Itās a person, which requires an entirely different set of precautions.
Ressler: So itās true. You really did bury Safiya Maroun alive.
Captain Kidd: I delivered the product I was paid to transport. Thatās what we do.
āā
Sofiya Maroun: [ Sobbing ]
[ Sofiya claws at the wood of the crate and manages to dislodge a jagged plank about eight inches long ]
āā
Ressler: So, the siteās geo-tagged, right? I mean, you send the buyers details, photos, maps.
Captain Kidd: We do, yeah, but the buyer wanted to take delivery somewhere that was especially remote. I can give you coordinates, but youāre never gonna get there in time.

[ Aram show the location information to the task force and two other agents ]
Aram: The GPS-tagged site indicates that Maroun is buried here, about a mile from the west shoreline on Taylors Island, and that puts her midway between the Slaughter Creek Broads and Robinson Neck Road.
Cooper: The buyer, how big of a head start does he have on us?
āā
[ In interrogation ]
Captain Kidd: We notified him a little over two hours ago. I can only assume heās on his way there now.

Captain Kidd: What do you mean āif he gets to herā? You better hope he gets to her. If he doesnāt, things go from bad to worse in a hurry.
Ressler: Whatās that supposed to mean?
Captain Kidd: I told you. Sheās on oxygen. Which is ā limited.
Ressler: How much oxygen?
Captain Kidd: Sheās got roughly six hours of air.
Ressler: Got less than an hour.

Safiya: What I do? You mean speaking the truth? Fighting people like the man you work for? [ In English ] Look, I want you to know I am not afraid.

Ā
[ Cooper is at the Post Office looking at a map on a large video display. Ressler is driving with Aram toward the site ]
Cooper: You should have Saint John Creek to your west. In about a half mile, youāre gonna make a left.
Ressler: Thereās no road on the GPS.
Cooper: Thatās because itās not on the GPS. Iām looking at satellite feeds. Looks like it may be some kind of a trail or maybe an old fire road.
Aram: Weāre not gonna get there in time.
āŖ Weād blacken each otherās skies⦠āŖ
Ā
Al-Harbi: Daler, get the equipment. Weāll do it here. In the clearing. Thereās more room.
[ Daler takes two suitcases from one of the SUVs ]
Safiya: What are you doing? What are those?
Al-Harbi: He wants clear footage. Start to finish. Every bit. Take her right side.
[ Daler opens a suitcase. Inside are two large cutting knives and two saws; one is a bone saw ]
[ Next he takes out a large sheet of plastic and lays it down ]
Al-Harbi: [ In English ] Go to the ground.

[ The Post Office ] [ Cooper and Ressler look at the video feed of Al-Harbi in his holding cell. His arm is in a sling and his leg is kicked up cockily on the table ]
Ressler: Is it just me or is he way too comfortable?
Cooper: Main Justice is sending an AUSA. He wonāt be comfortable once heās told what heās being charged with.
Aram: Maroun verified Kiddās intel.
Cooper: Howās she doing?
Aram: Good. Great, considering. EMTs gave her a clean bill of health.
Cooper: Did you get her statement?
Aram: Yeah, and based on what she told me, that guy has no business looking so relaxed.
Ressler: No, itās weird, right? [ Scoffs ] Itās kind of like you being in the circus.
Cooper: You were in the circus?
Aram: I, uh, ran away from home when I saw the Great Davido spin 75 plates at once. I was hired as a roadie on a Monday. Lost my virginity to a trapeze artist on a Tuesday. She left me for the strongman on a Wednesday, and I was back home eating matzo ball soup watching Jerry Maguire on a Thursday. It was, umā It was quite the whirlwind.
Ressler: Itās weird, right? Itās like heās in on a joke. [ Referring to Al-Harbi ]
Cooper: Forget about him. Go talk to Kidd. The marshals have him in protective custody. Telling us about Maroun was only part of the deal. Now heās gotta tell you what he knows about Townsend.
Ressler: Well, Kiddās scared to death of this guy. He doesnāt think we can protect him against Townsend.
Cooper: Well, of course we can, but we only will if he tells us what he knows.
Ā
[ Captain Kidd is being protected by three US Marshals ]
Captain Kidd: Iām not saying youāre bad at your jobs.
U.S. Marshal: Our job is to protect you, and youāre saying we canāt do that.
Captain Kidd: Not three of you. Not against him.
[ Knock on door ]
U.S. Marshal: Relax, itās the FBI. Agent Ressler. Heās coming here to ask you about the bogeyman.
Captain Kidd: Go ahead and make fun, but youāre gonna need more men.
U.S. Marshal #2: Townsend canāt hurt you if he canāt find you. Since weāre the only ones that know youāre here, thatās not gonna happen.
[ Knocking continues ]

Cooper: From Main Justice. Yes, Iāve been expecting you. Iāve had a copy made of Safiya Marounās statement, but, of course, youāll want to speak with her yourself.
AUSA Spears: Actually, that wonāt be necessary.
Cooper: Oh? And why is that?
Ā

Ressler: Aram, we got a problem.

Cooper: Of the 19 terrorists on 9/11, 15 came from Saudi Arabia. Dembe: You gave him the case so you could get to Captain Kidd and learn about Townsend. He got to Kidd, but kept him away from you so he could get to Townsend first. In the end, Townsend got to Kidd and neither of you learned anything.

Trivia: ā I can confirm parts of Cooperās story. In the years prior to 9/11, a group of Middle Easterners spent summers in Rochester, MN, where I and my husband worked at the Mayo Clinic. The women were always elegantly dressed, though they worn full black abayas and covered their faces. My husband, a top level administrator, told me he was informed that on September 12, 2001, when all airplanes were supposedly grounded, a Royal Saudi 747 swooped into the small (two runway) Rochester airport and picked up the Middle Easterners. (In contrast, an epidemiologist I worked with was in Washington on a professional trip to Health and Human Services. His flight was cancelled and he and some other doctors and had to rent a car to get back to Rochester, a two-day road trip.)
Ā
Hereās an account from September 4, 2003: NYT: White House Approved Departure of Saudis After Sept. 11, Ex-Aide Says http://nyti.ms/3dh5wKn
Ā
ā The echoes of the October 2018 murder of US resident and Washington Post opinion writer Jamal Khashoggi resonate throughout this episode, beginning with the story by Edgar Allan Poe, which describes a dismemberment. The suitcase of implements for the planned murder of Safiya Maroun include two large knives and two saws, including one for cutting bones. On February 26, 2021, President Biden finally released the Intelligence Community report, delayed by President Trump, about Khashoggiās killing:
Ā
NYT: Saudi Crown Prince Is Held Responsible for Khashoggi Killing in U.S. Report http://nyti.ms/3lW8B6o āBut the Biden administration stopped short of directly penalizing Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, calculating that the risk of damaging American interests was too great.ā
ā The redacted 4-page report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence is here: http://bit.ly/3u1E8a6
Ā
ā I thought the character of Safiya Maroun was beautifully acted by Rasha Zamamiri and very inspirational. In an episode with so many interwoven storylines, āherstoryā really shone. How appropriate for Womenās History Month.
