Brief (Where weāre at):
Liz has formed an alliance with Neville Townsend, the man who had put a bounty on Katarina Rostovaās life (the āTownsend Directiveā). Katarina (Blacklister #3), Lizās mother, had been fleeing from the Directive for 30 years, but for much of that time the Directive had been dormant, as Townsend had believed Katarina must be dead ~ until first Liz and then Ressler pried into Katarinaās past and inadvertently alerted the Townsend Organization that Katarina might still be alive. At that point, the Directive was once again put into play, leading Red to travel to Paris to alert Katarina. Instead of thanking him, Katarina had kidnapped him and subjected him to torture to get him to tell her why she was being hunted. It turned out that it was because Townsend thought she was N-13, a mysterious agent of uncertain allegiance thought by some to be a myth, but who Townsend thought was Katarina.
Red escaped from Katarina, but her next step was to move next door to Liz and pose as a new neighbor, befriending her and becoming Agnesās nanny. When Red found out, Katarina hired the Kazanjian Brothers (Blacklisters #156-157) to help her evade both Red and Townsend by staging her own death. She then went into hiding but convinced Liz to help her find out who was really N-13. So Liz kidnapped her grandfather Dominic Wilkinson (Dom), Katarinaās father, and helped subject him to torture. In a drugged state, Dom told an hallucinated vision of a young Katarina that it was really Red who was N-13. When Red arrived, Dom confessed what he had told Katarina, and then died. Katarina headed directly to the Townsend Organization to tell a regional director that Red was N-13. But Red got there first. He showed up to meet Katarina in addition to the representative from Townsend (who showed only as a propped-up corpse). Katarina got Red to admit he was N-13 in a conversation which she surreptitiously captured in a recorded call to Lizās cellphone. Then Red shot Katarina, inadvertently in full sight of Liz, who had come running to intervene.
Now, Liz has gone directly to Neville Townsend, armed with the audio-recording to prove that Katarina was not N-13 and that Red is. Because Townsend had vowed to kill Liz as well as Katarina, instead of going personally, Liz sent a āCyranoidā of herself (The Cyranoid, Blacklister #40), a look-alike who could see, hear and speak for Liz in real-time, via various technologies. Townsend was intrigued by Lizās offer, but didnāt trust her as a former FBI agent. So Townsend gave Liz a test: to have her Cyranoid murder Mary Bremmer (āChemical Mary,ā Blacklister #143), his own sister, who was being interrogated by the Reddington Task Force on site at the Post Office.
Red, in the meantime, went to the source of the āRent-A-Cyranoidā business to get the location of the individual who had acted as Lizās Cyranoid, a Miss Collins. He put her through a game of Russian Roulette with Liz online, trying to get Liz to give up her location. The game was a ruse (all chambers of the pistol were empty), but it kept Liz online long enough for Dembe to trace the communications link. Liz was expecting as much, since, when Red and Dembe arrived at the site, she was gone, but there was a burner phone. The phone connected to Neville Townsend, who gleefully shared with Red the news of his new alliance with Liz.

Liamās wife: We were just having coffee. He said his chest hurt, that he couldnāt breath. It happened so fast.
EMT2: Heās got fluid in his lungs.
Liamās wife: He collapsed.
EMT2: Possible acute respiratory edema.
EMT: Letās get him into the van.
EMT2: He needs oxygen.
[ They lift Liam onto the gurney ]
EMT: Maāam, stay here.

Real EMT: The patient. Is he inside?
Liamās wife: No, what? They were already here.
Real EMT: Who was already here?
Liamās wife: The medics.
Real EMT: We are the medics.
āā
[ Inside the ambulance, the EMT takes out a stainless steel device. It looks like a two-pronged fork, with sharpened prongs. He places it under Liamās chin, and fastens a strap behind Liamās head, to keep the prong in place, pressing into his neck under his chin ]
Liam: [ Muffled screaming ]
Ā
[ An industrial site ]
[ Liam is wheeled along a corridor into room with a half dozen computer screens showing only static surrounding a medical procedure chair ]
[ Footsteps approach ] [ Dr Laken Perillos is an attractive Black woman. She speaks slowly, dramatically and menacingly ]
Dr Laken Perillos: They say the Hereticās Fork exposes the sinner. Makes him renounce his sins. What do you renounce, Mr. Bracker? Hmm? Let me help you.
Liam Bracker: [ Gasping ]
Dr Perillos: Your cartelās expanded into territory that isnāt yours. My employer canāt allow that.
Liam Bracker: [ Strained ] Weāll stop. Weāll stop.
Dr Perillos: Oh, I know youāll stop. As of this moment ā youāre out of business, but thatās not why youāre here. Youāre going to tell me all the relevant details of your operation.
[ Cellphone buzzing ]
Dr Perillos: Every runner, every financierā
EMT2: [ Clears throat ] He says it canāt wait.
Dr Perillos: Hmm. [ To Liam ] Iāll be with you shortly. [ On phone: ] I was just about to phone you. Weāre ready to start the uplink.
Neville Townsend: Change of plans.
Dr Perillos: What does that mean?
Townsend: It means I need you here in the U.S. Itās, uhā Itās a matter of some urgency.
[ Cellphone clatters ]

[ Red is in a laundromat with Dembe and an associate named Bobby Dixon. Red watches laundry turning in a dryer ]
Bobby Dixon: You canāt be here. Theyāll see you.
Red: I once dropped acid with Allen Ginsberg. We spent a glorious afternoon in SoHo ā just tumbling.
Bobby: I know what you want, but I canāt help you.
Red: I miss that gentleness.
āŖ Summer winds are softly blowing āŖ
[ Red and Bobby continue to talk in Redās Mercedes ]
Red: Youāre a service provider, Bobby. I put you on the payroll to provide a service ā information on Townsend. Youāre laundering his money out of a laundromat, which is in itself entertaining, but I also know youāre skimming off the top.
Bobby: Thatās not true.
Red: Oh, youāre definitely stealing from Townsend. And while I admire your chutzpah, I canāt help but think that if I know youāre stealing from Townsend ā itās just a matter of time. So ā tell me where I can find him or where I can find someone who can.
Bobby: I donāt know where he is.
āŖ See the little girl āŖ
Bobby: But I know where his money goes. Once itās cleaned, I make a series of deposits.
Red: Who gets the biggest one?
Bobby: A woman. Laken Perillos.
Red: Perillos. The Brazen Bull.
Bobby: What?
Red: Go on.
Bobby: I donāt know who Perillos is, but I assume that if you could get to her, she could help you find Townsend.
Red: And where is she?
Bobby: In the States. I was told that she came in last night. Thatās all that I know.
[ Vehicle door opens. Dembe gets in ]
Dembe: That was Ruddiger. He thinks he has something for us.
Red: [ To Bobby ] You know what they call a money launderer who canāt be trusted? [ Dialing ] A bad investment. Get out of here.
āā
[ Red reaches Cooper ]
Red: I have a lead. [ Vehicle door closes ] Townsend.
Cooper: An arrest warrant has been issued for Elizabeth.
Red: Thatās a mistake.
Cooper: No. Itās a tragedy.
Red: I can tell you how to get to Townsend.
Cooper: The only person Iām focused on getting to is Elizabeth. I donāt see how thatās helped by going after the person whose sister she killed.
Red: Elizabeth killed Mary Bremmer at Townsendās instruction.
Cooper: Townsend wanted his sister killed?
Red: No, but you had her in custody, so he ordered the hit to keep her from talking. And as a test of Elizabethās allegiance.
Cooper: Keen and Townsend are allies? I thought she wanted him dead.
Red: A desire sheās put on hold so they can join forces and come after me.
Cooper: So if I follow your lead and go after Townsend, I could get to Elizabeth?
Red: Tell me, Harold, what do you know about the Brazen Bull?
Ā
[ The Post Office war room ]
Aram: A metal bull? Used to torture and execute people.
Cooper: According to legend, yes. The condemned were locked inside while a fire was set beneath it.
Ressler: That is brazen, but howās a Greek torture device relevant to us?
Cooper: The bull was invented by Perillos of Athens, a student of pain and the eponymous namesake of Laken Perillos, the woman Neville Townsend employs to inflict pain on his victims to extract information. Reddington believes Perillos can lead us to Townsend and Townsend can lead us to Keen.
Agent Park: Not after she killed his sister.
Cooper: Apparently thatās what Townsend wanted her to do ā as a test of her loyalty.
Aram: Mr. Reddington says Liz is working with Townsend? This is impossible.
Cooper: I hope youāre right. But thereās only one way to find out.
Park: What do we know about Perillos?
Cooper: Very little. Except that sheās brutal and effective. She came onto the scene six years ago. At that time, Antonio Bastinado, Dominic Morgan, and Andres Gataki controlled the ships that carried nearly all the contraband coming through the Bosphorus. How they managed it was a tightly guarded secret until Perillos got hold of them. Now theyāre dead. Townsend controls the strait ā and examples of Perillosā handiwork keep people in line.
Aram: Liz doesnāt know Townsend sanctioned this. I mean, she canāt know, right?
Ressler: Did Reddington give you a lead on Perillos?
Cooper: He gave me the one victim Perillos didnāt kill. Nameās Roman Einhorn. Has an estate in Westchester. Reddington says Perillos left him alive as a warning to others.
Park: What kind of warning?
Cooper: Apparently youāll see when you talk to him. Or ā try to.
Ā
[ Ressler and Park visit Roman Einhornās estate in Westchester VA ]
Caregiver: I told you, this is a waste of your time. He doesnāt want to see you.
Ressler: Well, he doesnāt have a choice.
Caregiver: Mr. Einhorn hasnāt accepted guests in almost two years.
Park: Maāam, weāre not his guests. Weāre the FBI. He has no choice.
Caregiver: What exactly did they tell you about Mr. Einhorn?
Ressler: We know he was maimed. Look, weāre just trying to find the woman who was responsible.
Caregiver: [ Sighs ] The gaze interaction can be slow to respond. He gets frustrated. You need to be patient.
[ Park and Ressler enter. Einhorn sits in wheelchair behind a computer monitor ]
Electronic Voice: I remember nothing.
Ressler: Mr. Einhorn, we understand your apprehension.
Park: Weāre trying to help.
Caregiver: And as he told you, Mr. Einhorn doesnāt want your help.
Ressler: Mr. Einhorn, Dr. Perillos isnāt just mutilating people, sheās murdering them. We understand that youāre the only person who survived her torture, the only one whoās seen her face, and we need your help to stop her.
Einhorn: What happened to me six years ago was a warning, an illustration to others who question her limits. I was told that if I assist the police, the doctor would come back to finish what she started. This was her promise to me, and so, as I said to you before, I know nothing.
[ Ressler and Park see that Einhornās entire lower jaw is missing ]
Ā
[ Red and Dembe stop by to see Max Ruddiger, Redās munitions expert (with a drinking problem). Ruddiger is boiling a yellow liquid in a large flask. His left hand is bandaged ]
Red: Ruddiger.
Ruddiger: [ Laughs ]
Red: How are you, my friend?
Ruddiger: Raymond, good to see you. Dembe.
Red: Smells. What the hell happened to your hand?
Ruddiger: Oh, uh, car door. I was cooked. Nearly lost my pinkie.
Red: You gotta be careful, Max. I need you with all 10 digits. That does smell.
Ruddiger: Yeah.
Red: What did you find?
Ruddiger: The car bomb that killed your man in Lagos was breathtaking. Large detonation wave, secondary explosion. Our friends over at A Command said they found ammonium nitrate crystals in the post-blast remains.
Red: That sounds bloody awful.
Ruddiger: Yeah.
Red: Whatās the lead?
Ruddiger: A partial print on the Tamiya connector.
Dembe: Iāll get it to Cvetko.
Ruddiger: Who could do this, Raymond? Not Elizabeth, Iām sure.
Red: Not on her own, no. Iām afraid Elizabeth has enlisted Neville Townsend to weaponize the various details sheās come to learn about my organization.
āā
[ Dembe steps outside ]
Dembe: [ On phone ] Cvetko, itās Dembe.
āā
Red: What the hell is that smell, anyway? Itās dreadful.
Ruddiger: Oh, Iām working on a cyclohexane-based accelerant. Low flash point. Stable.
And a real pain in the butt to any forensic chemical analysts.
āā
Dembe: Thank you, Cvetko. Weāll have it to you today.
[ Cellphone beepsš
]
[ Dembe sees a large white van pull into the parking lot. He goes back inside ]
Dembe: Raymond. Raymond, I think you should go.
[ Men jump out of the van ]
[ š„š„š„ Gunfight š„š„š„ ] [ Man grunts ]
Dembe: Raymond, go! Get him out of here!
[ Ruddiger is hit ]
Ruddiger: Ow!
Dembe: Go, go, go!
[ š„š„š„ Gunfight continues š„š„š„ ] [ Bullets ricocheting ]
[ The men cannot find Red, but they do find Dembe ā and hold him at gunpoint ]
Gunman: Where is he?! Where he is?! Reddington?!
Dembe: I donāt know.
Gunman: Search the building. We know heās here.
ā Get him in the van!
ā Warehouse is clear! No sign!
ā Forget it. Letās go!
[šØSiren wailingšØ]
ā Put him in, put him in.
ā Get in.
[ The van leaves, with Dembe and the gunmen inside ]
Ā
[ The scene of the ambush ]
Ressler: Weāre here now securing the scene, but back up. Tell me exactly what happened.
Red: It was an ambush. Heavily armed.
Ressler: What about a vehicle?
Red: It was a van. White Ford. Four or five men.
Ressler: Faces? Accents?
Red: I donāt know. They were masked, and I didnāt hear them speak. But come on, it was her, Donald.
Ressler: We donāt know that. You got a lot of enemies. Besides, Keen wouldnāt target Dembe.
Red: Iāve lost any perspective of what Agent Keen is capable of. I only know that we need to get Dembe back, because if he is in the hands of Perillos, it wonāt matter what Agent Keen wants ā only how long he can survive.
Ressler: Weāll find him.
Red: Call me back as soon as you know more.
āā
[ Agent Park walks over with an evidence bag ]
Park: Ressler.
[ Cellphone beepsš
]
Ressler: Headlight trim from the van. Itās a start.
Ā
[ Now it is Dembe on Dr Laken Perillosā treatment chair, the āHereticās Forkā lodged under his chin ]
Dr Perillos: [ Dramatically, even seductively ] Mm. Look at you. So youāre the one they call ā
Dembe.
[ She displays her collection of torture devices ]
Dr Perillos: Quite a collection, isnāt it? Each one teaches me something about pain. How to alleviate it ā or inflict it. When I was 12, my mother went to the hospital with a neural infection that was misdiagnosed as a strained muscle. She was given ibuprofen and sent homeā
Dembe: [ Strains, grunts ]
Dr Perillos: āwith an infection that left her in excruciating pain and bedridden for the rest of her life.
Dembe: [ Grunts ]
Dr Perillos: What caused the misdiagnosis?
Dembe: [ Grunts ]
Dr Perillos: The color of her skin.
[ She strokes Dembeās head ]
Dr Perillos: [ Whispering ] The belief ā even by some doctors ā that Blacks feel less pain than whites. Thick skin, biology, breeding ā Lies that lead to Black patients receiving far fewer pain meds than white patients. But we know the truth, donāt we, Dembe? We know all about pain, donāt we?
Dembe: [ Grunts ]
Dr Perillos: Itās called the Hereticās Fork. It was used during the Spanish Inquisition to extract confessions. Break the human sprit. Tell the truth, or sooner or later, youāll bleed to death. Itās inscribed with the Latin word āabiuro,ā which means to swear or take an oath. Will you do that for me, Dembe?
Dembe: [ Groans ]
Dr Perillos: Swear to tell me everything you know about the Sikorsky Archive?
Dembe: Walahi. I swear I wonāt tell you anything.
Dr Perillos: Oh, I think you will.
Ā
[ Sighs ] [ CellphoneāØringing⨠]
Red: Tell me you found something.
Ressler: We think we found the van used in the abduction. Itās missing a piece of the headlight trim we found at the scene.
Red: And what about Dembe? Does the van tell you anything about where they may have taken Dembe?
Ressler: No, weāre waiting on the lab, but they think itās unlikely. The vehicle was torched. MPDās doing a search now. Lab services should have a report within 24 hours, maybe less.
Red: We donāt have that kind of time.
Ressler: Look, Iām telling you what we know.
Red: Yeah. Thank you, Donald.
[ Cellphone beepsš
] [ Red pauses to think ]
Red: Ah.
Ā
[ Bobby Dixonās money laundering operation in the basement of the laundromat ]
[ Red barges in, gun drawn, disrupting the dozen or so women counting and packaging bills ]
[ Women scream ]
[ Red walks toward Bobby, pressing an alarm as he passes ]
Bobby Dixon: Look, pleaseā
[ Red grabs Bobby by the collar and shoves him against the wall ]
Bobby: [ Grunting ] No!
[ Red presses his pistol against Bobbyās cheek ]
Red: You betrayed us. You heard Dembe talking about Ruddiger.
Bobby: No.
Red: And you knew where we were gonna be.
Bobby: No.
Red: You set us up.
[ Telephone āļø ringing ]
Bobby: [ Breathing heavily ]
Red: I think you better answer that.
[ Bobby puts the phone on speaker ]
Man on phone: Operator 627, Ward West.
Bobby: Ward West. Briargate confirm.
Man on phone: We have a code red alarm indicator. Do you have a breach?
Red: Yes, thereās been a breach ā by me. Hereās what happens next. Iām gonna give you a phone number. Youāre gonna pass it up the food chain to your boss. Tell Neville Townsend itās Raymond Reddington. Tell him to call me in 20 minutes at 202-555-0184. Itās a conversation he wonāt want to miss.
[ Call ends ] [ Red shoots Bobby in the leg above his knee ] [ Gunshot š„ ]
Bobby: Aah!
[ Women scream ]
Bobby: [ Groaning ]
Red: Iāll get you a cane to remember me by. My apologies, ladies.
[ Red leaves ]
Ā
[ Neville Townsend appears on the multiple video screens at scene of Dembeās torture ]
Townsend: Hello, Mr. Zuma. I-Iām sorry we have to meet like this, but Iāve found this process to be both efficient and effective for all involved. Iām going to ask you some questions. Youāre going to answer. If you waver, Dr. Perillos will help encourage your cooperation. Letās begin with the Sikorsky Archive. Does Reddington have it? āā Uh, M-Mr. Zuma, I need an answer. No? Nothing?
[ Dr Perillos approaches Dembe with a syringe ]
Dr Perillos: The Irukandji jellyfish is found off the coast of Australia. Its sting is only mildly irritating, but within half an hour, its venom induces excruciating muscle cramps, severe back pain, and a burning sensation in the skin and face.
[ She strokes Dembeās cheek ]
Dr Perillos: Headaches. Sweating. Nausea. Itās called Irukandji Syndrome. The pain, combined with an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, causes a feeling of impending doom. Chances are ā you just may want to impale yourself to ease the pain.
Townsend: Uh, Mr. Zuma, shall we discuss the Sikorsky Archive, or doā do you need some encouragement?
Dembe: [ Groans ]
Townsend: Bad choice, Mr. Zuma.
Dr Perillos: Donāt say I didnāt warn you.
[ Dr Perillos injects Dembe ]
Townsend: Doctor, Iāll give the two of you some time together.
Dembe: [ Groans ]
āā
[ Blake Brown comes up to Townsend ]
Townsend: What is it?
Blake: Itās Reddington. Heās made contact.
Ā
[ Red waits in the darkened kitchen of his restaurant ]
[ CellphoneāØringingāØ] [ Red picks up ]
Red: Dembe Zuma. I want him back.
Townsend: Iām sure you do. Keen tells me he knows all your secrets.
Red: Elizabeth would never hurt Dembe.
Townsend: I want the Archive.
Red: At what cost? A war with me? Have you thought about what that means?
Townsend: All Iāve thought about recently is the fact that you killed my family.
Red: I donāt know what Elizabeth is telling you, but Katarina Rostova killed your family, and I killed her. That alone should be enough for us to peacefully co-exist. A fact we can discuss in person once you accept my offer.
Townsend: W-What kind of offer?
Red: For Dembe. Me for him.
Townsend: A trade.
Red: Yes. And then an uprising.
Townsend: [ Chuckles ] Your people. Rallying around your sacrifice. I-I had no idea you were such a romantic.
Red: [ Chuckling ] Oh, my goodness, yes. I have many āthoughts that do often lie too deep for tears.ā
[ Wm Wordsworth ] At the moment, the main one being to put a bullet in your forehead. Do we have a deal?
Townsend: We do. Iāll call you back with the where and when.
Ā
Dembe: [ Groaning ]
Dr Perillos: [ Breathily ] I wasnāt making it up. About the doctors. In 2016, 222 white doctors at the University of Virginia [š See Note] were given mock medical files of a white patient and a Black patient and asked to gauge their pain on a scale of 1 to 10. They underestimated the Black patientās pain because ā now, these are doctors ā they said they thought Black people had less sensitive nerve endings.
[ Dr Perillos runs her finger across Dembeās forehead and down his face ]
Dr Perillos: Why is it that white people donāt see our pain? I know Townsend doesnāt see mine. What about Reddington? Does he see yours? I know who you are to him. What you do for him.
Dembe: [ Groaning ]
Dr Perillos: The secrets you keep, like youāre doing now, not telling me about the Archive. Does he know what pain that causes you? I donāt mean this pain. Anyone can see that. I mean inside.
Dembe: [ Groans ]
Dr Perillos: The pain in your heart. Can he see that?
Dembe: [ Groans ]
Ā
[ Neville Townsend comes back online in the torture chamber ]
Townsend: You can stop.
Dr Perillos: Excuse me?
Townsend: Weāre making a trade.
Dr Perillos: For whom? Who could know the Archive more than Zuma?
Dembe: Raymond. [ Breathing heavily ]
[ Townsend goes off-line ]
Dr Perillos: Heās not doing this to save you. Heās doing it to save himself.
Dembe: He- He- He does feel my pain.
Dr Perillos: Does he now? Good. Then maybe heāll feel this.
[ Dr Perillos shoves the Hereticās Fork deeper into Dembeās neck ]
Dembe: [ Screaming ]
Ā
[ The tawdry āJefferson Suites Motelā ]
[ Bell dingsš
] [ Red enters ] [ The Motel Owner is seated behind plexiglass, stuffing food in his mouth ]
Motel Owner: Help you?
Red: Iām here for a room. Neville said heād leave a key.
Motel Owner: Oh, Neville said?
Red: Neville said.
Motel Owner: Ah. Come around. Iāll buzz you in.
[ Door buzzes ] [ A sign on the door says āDOG ON PREMISESā ]
Red: What about the dog?
Motel Owner: Thereās no dog.
[ The Motel Owner hands Red a thermos bottle. Red unscrews the top and sniffs it ]
Red: Is this Kosher?
[ Lid opens, liquid pouring ]
Red: LāChaim.
[ Red drinks the liquid ]
Red: [ Shuddering ] Ahh.
Motel Owner Okay. Thereās a bench outside. Have a seat. Concierge will be with you shortly.
[ The Motel Owner makes a call ] [ Dialing,āØringingāØ]
[ Red goes outside and sits on the bench ]
Ā
Dr Laken Perillos: [ To Dembe ] Iām supposed to let you go. But your resistance is an inspiration. It makes me wonder ā are you really that beholden to him? Would you hold out until itās too late? I guess weāll never know.
Dembe: [ Groaning ] [ Grunts ]
[ Dembe breaks one of the straps binding his wrists. He removes the Hereticās Fork from his neck and starts to unstrap the other. Dr Perillos grabs a gun and points it at him ]
Dr Perillos: Get back in that chair! I wonāt ask again!
[ Dembe stabs Dr Perillos in the hand with the Hereticās Fork ]
Dr Perillos: Aah!
[ Dembe grabs the gun ]
Dembe: [ Breathing heavily ] Antidote!
[ She points to the antidote, which he stabs into his leg ]
Dr Perillos: [ Groaning ]
Ā
[ The sedative is blurring Redās vision ]
[ Redās cellphoneāØringingāØ]
Red: Dembe.
Dembe: Donāt do it, Raymond. Iām coming. Donāt give yourself up.
[ Itās too late. A black SUV drives up. Men grab Red and push him inside ]
[ Vehicle door closes ] [ It drive away ]
Ā
[ Ressler and a TAC team raid the torture site, but everyone is gone ]
āā
[ Dembeās cellphoneāØringingāØ]
Dembe: Tell me you got there in time. Tell me you found him.
Ressler: No, we were too late.
Dembe: What did you find?
Ressler: Weāre securing the scene now, but it looks like her people broke everything down and cleared out. Thereās no sign of Reddington. Look, this doctor, is there anything that you can tell me? Any specifics? Any details that might help?
Dembe: She had tools for torture, and she injected me with a vial of poison from jellyfish.
Ressler: Jellyfish?
Dembe: Irukandji jellyfish. Thatās what she called them. I reached out to some associates of ours to find out who traffics them.
[ Cellphoneš
beepingš
~ another call ]
Ressler: Alright, wellā Look, my forensics teamās here. You call me as soon as you hear anything and Iāll do the same.
āā
[ Dembe pours alcohol on a cloth and dabs his injured neck with it .)
Dembe: [ Breathing heavily ]

[ Red comes to consciousness facing the wall of computer screens showing only static. His suit jacket is off, his wrists are strapped down and his left pant leg is pulled up to the knee for injections ]
[ Neville Townsend comes online ]
Townsend: Iām impressed. You kept your end of the deal, and in a roundabout way, so did I.
Red: Dembe escaped.
Townsend: Yes. As promised, heās free.
Red: And with him went your leverage to get me to talk.
Townsend: Oh, I donāt know about that.
āā
[ Dr Perillos enters ]
Red: The Brazen Bull, I presume.
Townsend: Excellent. Youāre familiar with Dr. Perillos.
Red: Certainly. Legendarily draconian methods. Undeniably effective results. This is almost a bucket-list moment for me.
Dr Perillos: Shall we begin?
Red: Oh, letās not.
Dr Perillos: Are you familiar with lymphocytic choriomeningitis?
Red: If I say yes, can we skip the demonstration?
Dr Perillos: Itās a viral infection carried by mice that causes ascending paralysis. The virus attacks the peripheral nervous system, then works its way upwards through the legs and torso to the chest, where it paralyzes the lungs ā causing the victim to suffocate.
Red: Careful. Iām terribly ticklish.
[ She injects him ]
Red: [ Laughs ] See?
Townsend: There is an antidote, which I will supply after youāve told me about the Archive. Uhā
think about it. But not too long. You havenāt got much time left.
Ā
[ Dembe arrives at the Post Office ]
Dembe: What did you find out? I havenāt heard back from our people yet.
Ressler: Well, it turns out Irukandji jellyfish are sourced only by a few select brokers.
Dembe: Brokers?
Park: Who sell animals to research labs, universities, veterinary schools, and companies to provide animal testing services.
Aram: Disgusting, I know, and it gets worse. There are two types of these ādealers.ā Class A, which breed specifically for research purposes, and Class B, who source animals from random locations like auctions, pounds, or even newspaper ads.
Ressler: Okay, that is disgusting.
Aram: Right? I feel like thereās a separate Blacklist case in here somewhere.
Cooper: The point being?
Aram: The point being I could only find three Class B vendors who even supply our species of jellyfish. Two havenāt made a sale in well over six months.
Dembe: And the third?
Aram: The third is Tolofson-Hammond. London based. License revoked. They have a court case pending, and one of their clients who failed to appearā
[ A photo of Dr Perillos comes up ]
Dembe: Thatās her.
Park: Nameās Kayla Lynne Banks. Last known address in Cardiff.
Aram: Both of which are fakes.
Cooper: Okay, letās work backwards. Unwind her alias. Find out where she got her passports, her bank accounts. How she built this false identity may point us to where she is now.
Ā
[ The torture site ] [ Dr Perillos pokes Red with an instrument, moving up his body ]
Dr Perillos: Nothing? No pain at all? Good.
Red: And here I thought you fetishized pain.
Dr Perillos: No more than an oncologist fetishizes cancer. I study it in the hopes of finding a cure for it.
Red: I donāt believe you. I think you enjoy the means too much to really care about the end.
Dr Perillos: Iām not talking about a medicine. Iām talking about a solution. An alteration in our DNA. Did you know the mole rat canāt feel burning pain because it lacks the chemical Substance P?
Red: You want people to be like mole rats?
Dr Perillos: I want us to be impervious to pain.
Red: What a terrible idea.
Dr Perillos: Spoken like someone whoās never had his pain ignored, whoās never begged for relief and not gotten it.
Red: Iād prefer to have my pain ignored than to have no pain at all. Without pain, there can be no real pleasure. Without the lows, you have no way to measure the highs. If any part of your sadism-in-the-name-of-science is designed to improve the human condition, making us unfeeling is absolutely the wrong way of going about it.
[ She pokes him in the chest ]
Red: [ Groans ] Case in pointā This is gonna make killing you infinitely more pleasurable.
Dr Perillos: Weāre ready.
Townsend: How much time has he got?
Dr Perillos: An hour. Maybe less.
Townsend: So, the Archive. Like the minister says at every wedding ā Speak now ā or forever hold your peace.
Ā
[ Cooperās office ] [ Knock on door ] [ Dembe enters ]
Dembe: Is there anything on the APB?
Cooper: Not yet. And on your end?
Dembe: Iāve called everyone, but everything is taking too long. There must be something they missed at the scene.
Cooper: Weāve reviewed all the crime-scene analysis from where you were held, plus what we found ā or didnāt find ā at the van.
Dembe: Then we should go through it again.
āā
Cooper: You take the forensics from the van. Iāll review the findings from the lab. Donāt take this the wrong way, but youād make a good cop.
Dembe: You know what I do for a living.
Cooper: I do. I also know who you are.
Dembe: A Black Muslim.
Cooper: That describes quite a few cops.
Dembe: We will find Raymond.
Cooper: I hope youāre right. But he lives on the edge. And one day, he may go over it.
Dembe: The report says the van was burned using an accelerant.
Cooper: Thatās right. Uhā cyclohexane.
Dembe: Which burns at a low flash point. Thatās why there were no forensics.
Cooper: And what does that tell you?
Dembe: That the absence of evidence is evidence.
Ā
[ Red speaks to the video screens ]
Red: [ Groans softly ] Itās not everything you thought it would be, is it? This moment? Youāve waited for it, anticipated it. [ Coughs lightly ] But somehow, itās ā dissatisfying.
Townsend: It actually exceeds expectation.
Red: I wasnāt talking to you. We know who my assassin really is ā donāt we, Elizabeth? It saddens me to bear witness to this moment in your life. Thisā crossing of a Rubicon from which you can never get back. I know, in this moment, it may appear self-serving to suggest that you instruct the good doctor to administer the antidote, but I strongly suggest that you do just that ā because ā I have ā seen the other side of that river ā and itās a place I never ā never wanted you to go.
Ā
[ Ruddiger is at home, now recovering from a bullet wound in addition to his injured hand ]
[ Knock on door ]
Ruddiger: Who is it?!
[ Knocking continues ]
[ Ruddiger gets up and goes to the door ]
Ruddiger: I saidā
[ Dembe pushes the door in and points his gun at Ruddiger ]
Ruddiger: Dembe, wait! Hold on!
Dembe: Cyclohexane! Your accelerant. You used it to help them torch the van they put me in.
Ruddiger: Wait. Stop.
Dembe: You set us up!
Ruddiger: They tortured me! My hand! They made me to do it!
Dembe: Where is he?
Ruddiger: They werenāt supposed to take you! They were looking for Reddington!
Dembe: Well, now they have him.
Ruddiger: Yeah.
Dembe: Ruddiger, look at me! Iām gonna make what that woman did to your hand feel like a manicure unless you tell me where they are holding Raymond. ā Ruddiger!
Ruddiger: The warehouse! East of the airport. Braxton and 9th.
[ Dembe tosses Ruddiger a zip tie]
Dembe: The radiator. Tie yourself to it.
Ruddiger: Dembe, please.
Dembe: Now!
Ruddiger: [ Grunting ] Heās not coming back!
[ Dembe stares at him and leaves ]
Ruddiger: [ Calling after him ] Heās not coming back!
Ā
Red: [ Gasping ]
Dr Perillos: What youāre experiencing is unilateral paralysis. Your diaphragm is partially functioning as the paralysis moves higher into the chest cavity. Soon, your diaphragm will be completely paralyzed and youāll need a machine to assist in breathing. Unfortunately for you, we have no machine. But I do have this.
[ Dr Perillos holds up an injection ]
Townsend: The doctorās antidote takes immediate effect. Youāll be breathing normally within seconds. All you need to do first is tell me what you know about the Archive.
Ā
[ Cooperās office ]
Cooper: Iām sorry, say that again?
Dembe: 8353 Braxton.
Cooper: Iām writing it down. But before I sent units, Iād like to get inside.
Dembe: Thereās no time. Iāll explain later. Just send units.

[ Red gasping ]
Dembe: Itās okay, Raymond. What have you done to him?

Dembe: [ To Dr Perillos ] I wonāt ask twice.

Dembe: Give it to him.
[ She injects him ]
Dembe: Whatās wrong with him?
Dr Perillos: I paralyzed his diaphragm. You came here to save him. He came here to save himself.
Dembe: You look at the cause. I only see the effect. Iām standing here while he can barely breathe. Would Townsend do that for you? Would anyone?
Red: [ Coughs, gasps ]
[ Red begins to inhale again ]
Dembe: I want to know exactly what you did to him.

[ Once again, Resslerās Raiders arrive too late. They find Dr Perillos alive, still restrained in the chair ]
[ Music continues ]
Ressler: [ To the TAC Team ] Hey, call the EMTs and search the building for Reddington and Dembe.
[ Ressler introduces himself to Dr Perillos ]
Ressler: Donald Ressler, FBI. Iām gonna get you medically cleared, and then whatever you told Reddington about Townsend, well, youāre gonna tell me.

[ Townsend is napping, sitting in his chair ] [ Door opens ]
Blake Brown: Sir. Iām sorry to wake you, sir. Theyāre ready for you.

Dembe: Do you believe her?
Red: That Townsend paid her in cash and always used a burner phone? I-I suppose.
Dembe: I heard from Park. The video link to Townsend was encrypted. Theyāre going to try and trace it, but theyāre not optimistic. All of this and going after Perillos got us nothing.
Red: I think we both know thatās not true.
Dembe: We came for each other.
Red: Do you think that I see your pain? āā Do you?
Dembe: No. āā I donāt. Not always.
Ā
[ Townsend continues pounding the black sack ]
Townsend: [ Grunting ]
Ā
[ Elevator doors rumble open ] [ Dembe steps outside to meet Cooper ]
Cooper: Howās the patient?
Dembe: Heāll be okay.
Cooper: Thanks to you. Good detective work.
Dembe: [ Scoffs ] I told you weād find him.
Cooper: You were right. But so was I. He lives at the edge, and one day, he will go over it. You need to be prepared for when that happens. By the way, we went to Ruddigerās apartment. He wasnāt there.
āā
[ Flashback: ]
[ Ruddigerās apartment ]
Ressler: I got nothing. You?
[ Park holds up the zip tie that had bound Ruddiger ]
āā
Dembe: I left him tied.
Cooper: Well, he wasnāt there.
Ā
[ Music continues ]
[ Townsend continues pounding the black sack ]
Townsend: [ Grunting ]
Godwin Page: Neville, thatās enough. Thatās enough, Neville!
[ With difficulty, Godwin pulls Townsend away ]
[ The sack is cut down. Itās a body bag. One of Townsendās men unzips it. Inside is Ruddiger, horribly battered and bloody, but alive ]
Townsend: [ Breathing heavily ] I want you to know ā youāre only alive because of Keen. You understand that, Ruddiger? She begged me to spare your life. A life which I now own. [ Maliciously: ] Welcome to the family! Donāt fail me again!

PNAS, Kelly Hoffman et al [UofVA, Charlottesville]: Racial bias in pain assessment and treatment recommendations, and false beliefs about biological differences between blacks and whites http://bit.ly/3lgCoGs
// 4/19/2016
Abstract: Black Americans are systematically undertreated for pain relative to white Americans. We examine whether this racial bias is related to false beliefs about biological differences between blacks and whites (e.g., āblack peopleās skin is thicker than white peopleās skinā). Study 1 documented these beliefs among white laypersons and revealed that participants who more strongly endorsed false beliefs about biological differences reported lower pain ratings for a black (vs. white) target. Study 2 extended these findings to the medical context and found that half of a sample of white medical students and residents endorsed these beliefs. Moreover, participants who endorsed these beliefs rated the black (vs. white) patientās pain as lower and made less accurate treatment recommendations. Participants who did not endorse these beliefs rated the black (vs. white) patientās pain as higher, but showed no bias in treatment recommendations. These findings suggest that individuals with at least some medical training hold and may use false beliefs about biological differences between blacks and whites to inform medical judgments, which may contribute to racial disparities in pain assessment and treatment.

⫠Stabat Mater für Chor und Orchester, Op. 58, Teil 1: No. 3, Eja, Mater, fons amoris
Composed by AntonĆn DvoÅĆ”k
Performed by StƤdtischer Chor Recklinghausen, Sinfornieorchester Recklinghausen, Hubert Reichert(Liturgy which DvoÅĆ”k put to music:)
Stabat Mater dolorosa
(At the Cross Her Station Keeping)At the Cross her station keeping,
stood the mournful Mother weeping,
close to Jesus to the last.Through her heart, His sorrow sharing,
all His bitter anguish bearing,
now at length the sword has passed.O how sad and sore distressed
was that Mother, highly blest,
of the sole-begotten One.Christ above in torment hangs,
she beneath beholds the pangs
of her dying glorious Son.Is there one who would not weep,
whelmed in miseries so deep,
Christās dear Mother to behold? Can the human heart refrain
from partaking in her pain,
in that Motherās pain untold?Bruised, derided, cursed, defiled,
she beheld her tender Child
All with bloody scourges rent:For the sins of His own nation,
saw Him hang in desolation,
Till His spirit forth He sent.O thou Mother! fount of love!
Touch my spirit from above,
make my heart with thine accord:Make me feel as thou hast felt;
make my soul to glow and melt
with the love of Christ my Lord.Holy Mother! pierce me through,
in my heart each wound renew
of my Savior crucified:Let me share with thee His pain,
who for all my sins was slain,
who for me in torments died.Let me mingle tears with thee,
mourning Him who mourned for me,
all the days that I may live:By the Cross with thee to stay,
there with thee to weep and pray,
is all I ask of thee to give.Virgin of all virgins blest!,
Listen to my fond request:
let me share thy grief divine;Let me, to my latest breath,
in my body bear the death
of that dying Son of thine.Wounded with His every wound,
steep my soul till it hath swooned,
in His very Blood away;Be to me, O Virgin, nigh,
lest in flames I burn and die,
in His awful Judgment Day.Christ, when Thou shalt call me hence,
by Thy Mother my defense,
by Thy Cross my victory; While my body here decays,
may my soul Thy goodness praise,
safe in paradise with Thee. Amen. From the Liturgia Horarum. Translation by Fr. Edward Caswall (1814-1878)
